H18sx Wing holders/clamps
Hi there,
I've got a 1990 Hobie 18sx. I'm looking for a pair of wing holders/clamps for use during trailering. Unfortunately Hobie company no longer manufactures this type of product.
Is there anybody out there that could provide some detailed information on how to make a set of wing holders/clamps.... or better yet does anybody have a pair for sale?
Also, anybody with some words of wisdom about makeing rigging/de-rigging easier and quicker before and after trailering, would be greatly appreciated.
Please e-mail me at mteipel@canada.com
Thanks,
Marcus
You can build one pretty easily. First you need a base. A 2 ft long 2x6 with a hole cut in it to fit over the mast base works well. Glue some foot long 1/2 inch thick foam to the bottom and squash it down so that it takes the shape of the crossbeam. Attach some soft pads (rolled up carpet, foam, etc) on the bottom of the base near the right and left ends. The TheMightyHobie18 crossbeam is curved, the ends of the base will not touch the beam at the ends without the pads. Make the pads big enough so that the base rests on the cross beam at the ends and the mast base and is STABLE.
Now you want to build a T. The top of the T goes between the wings and keeps them from touching the diamond wires. The bottom of the T is a spacer to raise the Top to the correct height.
The easiest way to build the spacer is to stack 8 in long pieces of 2x6 about 10-12 inches high, at the center of the base. You will need to drill holes in the first couple to fit over the mast base.
Now hold the wings a couple of inches away from the diamond wires and measure the distance between them. Cut some 2x6 to this length, attach to the spacer. Now pad the ends and you are done.
Use strong bungee to hold the wings together

Take PVC 1,5 inches pipe to make two cross holders (one on the front, one on the back). Measure them to make sure your wings do not jam with the diamond wire. On the ends put T shaped connectors, glu them and cut three quarter of the ciconference so they clip in the aluminium tube of the wing. Tie this with rope or bungee on the wings, you are set: this is cheap and very efficient (trailed my boat from Florida to new Jersey).
For rigging the boat I used the winch of the trailer to step up the mast with one person on the tramp preventing it to go on the side.
