how do you remove
ahh yes, its only 6" or so in there in my experience. Not far past where the bolt goes through.
I've gone about it two different ways.
One I took an old mainsheet, and tied constricting knots around the busted comptip and tied the other end to a BIG tree.
The extrusion was attached to the tow hook on my trooper. We pulled and pulled and pulled with that thing until it popped out.
The whole process needed beer and a video camera.
Oh yeah, I also used a plumber's torch and a flathead screwdriver to fish it out.
You have to remove the tang and drive the rivets in since they help hold the CompTip & the extrusion together.
Heat the extrusion to help break down the epoxy that glues the CompTip in. Wiggle / flex the CompTip to help break the bond.
Then pull as described above.
Yeah, like Matt says, take out the metal parts like rivets holding it together.
The tought part was getting a good grip on the comptip part. I used an old rudder pin, drove it through the comptip, wrapped the rope around the comptip just below (mast side) of the rudder pin, and pulled.

in my case,
I was the lucky beneficiary of a used mast when I had an oopsies and dropped mine, put a hole in it. Comptip was fine, but the extrusion was messed up. The new/used mast had a crack in the comptip but the extrusion was fine, so I had to take my pre-existing good comptip and put it on the new good mast extrusion.
And yes, the procedure does go off better with a case of corona handy.
We were laughing our butts off stone cold sober!
Jamie,
I just remembered that I still have that comp-tip in my barn. (You gave it to me when I bought the blue H16 from you) Other than the hole that you drove the pin through, it really doesn't look that bad. I imagine it'll find it way to a dumpster sometime soon.
BTW: The blue H16 now resides on Folley Beach, SC.

MAry,
I am trying to ship it to some cold region of the country but the carrier is shying away at the overall length including the tip, so I am considering removing the tip and shipping it seperatly, or finding a carrier that will ship it whole. If anyone knows of a carrier, please chime in.
Try Roadway Express. They are easier to work with than any of the other carriers I have tried.
Another possible solution. Contact several boat carriers and see if they have a truck going in that direction. They might take it along as a little extra revenue. (I was born and raised in the trucking industry. Since deregulation any can haul anything if you make the right deal. It used to be governed.)
