I 20 set up help

Sorry I don't have any pictures, Dave, but the halyard is the same size for both snuffer and pole applications. It comes with the boat, and I'm guessing it's in the 5/16" range.

And downhauls vary as much as sunglasses. I used to have double blocks attached to a hook on each side of the sail's grommet to achieve the rated downhaul purchase. I have since moved to a cascade system (same purchase ratio). Here's a brief description of setup.

I tied two blocks (about 29mm)to the main via a short stretch of spectra through the grommet, and these hang about 2" from the grommet's lower edge. I have another pair of smaller blocks (sized for your downhaul line) with short pieces of spectra that go on next. The line on the smaller block is routed through the larger blocks on the main, and then led to the front of the mast, where the two lines are tied together (it is best to pull the sail down a bit and tie securely to minimize slack). The downhaul line is then led through the system as follows (from one side to the other):

Downhaul line through pivot/cam block (backwards, of course). Next, run line up through smaller block and back down to center cheek block on the mast. Continue back up other side through smaller block and down through pivot/cam block (forward).

As you pull the downhaul, the line will pull the smaller block downward through the bigger block attached to the grommet. That's the cascade system. It sounds complicated, but if I have a picture of it in use, I'll try to attach it...

If that's Team Space Coast's old boat, it should be all ready to go with the halyard and downhaul. If I recall, that boat did sell to someone in SC...

In any case, congrats on your fine choice of boats.

Youre right, Team Space Coast' boat. The halyard just seems a little large, especially for the lake wind.

Most sailors use 3/16 or smaller and taper it on both ends if using the snuffer (I think marlow is stock). The lengths of the haylards I used on my I 20 were different when using a snuffer vs. straigth pole but it depends on how you rig it. Most I20 sailors that use the snuffer run the halyard from the head of the spin up through the bail on the mast(some attach a small block on the bail) up through the cheek block on the mast down through the bail to a block on the front beam (some run the haylard through the spreaders and some have a bungee loop in front of the spreaders)then through a cleat or spinlock to a block attached to the rear beam with bungee and back to the front beam (some drill through the front beam and put a thru deck bushing on each side especially if you have a self tacker) into the snuffer bag through the patches in the spin and tie off to the last patch. I wasnt sure about the bungee above the spreaders, but thats how I ran it. Just dumb luck I guess. I did make the mistake of attaching the staight pole(non-snuffer) halyard and raising the mast, only to find the snuffer spin had its own halyard. I used the old paperclip and masking tape trick to run the snuffer halyard up.

Yes I am planning on coming to the Outback Regatta and sailing on a Tiger or I 20 with Mike Krantz.

Read Ricks book, took his class, sailed against some great sailors(Nigel Dave lennard, Rick Harper-My heroes) and now I am ready to step it up a notch and see what the I 20 class can do for me. I see that the portsmouth number is pretty low, maybe I can bring it up a little(HAHA)

Can you make Rick buy an I 20? We might have a fleet of 20's if so. Rick, Are you listening? Do I need to call your insurance co. for you?
