Anybody have any idea what the duty/tax rates are for shipping a cat from Europe to the US? What is the cost of sending a cat via container from England to US? Just trying to get an idea of what the costs would be to buy a Europeon built cat.

Thanks

If you ship it ground and it is already boxed you can figure on about $1700 for surface freight + insurance to the west coast. About $250 less to the East Coast.

USD 1700,- is alot more than I expected when considering my other experiences. I mean a whole container to USA in the time I worked on the

A-cats for USA

deal was about 2500,- USD if memory serves me right. Surely a crate of about 1mtr by 1 mtr by 5 mtr. must be considerable cheaper. Okay the mast is problematic.

Anyways, I can't see John P shipping two Stealths to the USA for that F16HP race in spring 2002 for that kind of money. And he said he was seriously thinking about it. Maybe John P. has got a far better deal on shipping from his end. Now I'm not sure about which cat Mark is talking about but if it's John's Stealth design than asking him would be a smart.

Or maybe a UK based sailor can phone a International transporter and ask for a crate shipment price. Price differ from country to country and even bakc and forth maybe be different but USD 1700,- for a crate is more than I expected.

I have done some work on exporting Catamarans (F16HP)to the states, The only way to ship economicallyis to use a 40 foot contaner because of the 28foot mast, the quotes I received were as follows

Birmingham UK to New York/Miami $1600

Los Angeles $2340

Insurance 4 boats $120

1 layer of boats = 4 boats

2 layers =8 boats

packing costs circa $400

cost per boat new york/miami $430 8 off $215

cost per boat LA $585 8 off $308

Value added Tax in the UK is 17.5% ($1955) on Stealth

Import duty by the States =1%

one boat in a special packing case would work out circa $1686 to Miami out of the question

I found back then (A-cats), just like John, that the mast makes it expensive due to the fact you'll need a 40 ft. container. A few months back I looked a bringing in some cats from australia to NL and a 1x1x5 mtr. crate (enough for all except mast) was possible for 800 AUs$ = USD 450,-.

This is why I am very surprised about the crate pricing to the USA of USD 1700,-.

Then I got a mail from someone from brasil telling me he had shipped a mast from NL to brasil for a very fair amount which I don't remember anymore.

Can you tell me how much it is to ship just a mast to the EU ?

Thanks for the replys, John I don't understand your cost breakdown. Is the $2340 for the entire 40' container? Is the packing cost $400 per boat or for 8? Do we have to pay the 17.5 VAT if the boat is being exported to the US? Thanks
