Yo Les, Woutre, Phill and all,

1. We had a distance race in St. Croix Saturday. "Chantal' passed us by and left some SE wind and waves.

2. So, original topic some weeks ago matrialized in a good report.

3. I set rake at #2 hole from the TOP of the dual forward chainplates. Set the rear stays to tighten rig. OK

4. Put prebend back into mast,....3.5 inches spreader rake, with tight diamond wires ( note,...not supertight)

5. Raised daggarboards(30% as suggested) upwind and did not change them.Downhaul on about 33% and not touched.

6. Mast rotator positioned about 20% ( approx pointed to rear crossbeam/hull area),..the adjustment was made until the first set of telltales evenly broke

7. Put 1 inch into outhaul(to loosen)

Conditions ; 15+/- wind,....2 foot wave ( crest to trough 2+2=4ish)

8. Results,...boat raised hull nicely in puffs,....was NOT irratic,...hull stay up with NO change in sheet/trav/tiller positions,...the I-17 maintained forward speed to split the waves and have the upwind hull clear wave,.....speed was good......light weather helm( realy light,..almost not there..)which is a nice feel.

9. I believe these settings put you about 95% there. the last 5% is that 'ultimate' speed setting that we all look for.

Thanks to the forum input. All the comments worked out. The boat I have to beat now is a P-19MX,...which is doable,..I took one on corrected time by 20 seconds.

By the way , what is the TEXEL for the P-19MX?,....Down here they rate them equal with a N5.8,...which I believe is a wrong figure,.....confirmation please?

regards,

Bruce

Brobu,

Prindle 19 MX has never been measured by Texel officials, there are no MX's in EU as far as I can tell.

Give me the new specs for the Prindle 19 MX and I will estimate the new texel rating for you.

However a standard P19 is already rated equal as N5.8 in the Eu version which doesn't have the flap of sail under the lowest sail section.

Good to hear that you did well.

Bruce

You find that the outhual will want to be pulled as far out as possible, thus flattening the sail completly.

As for the boards, you will be able to

feel

when they need to come up, forget percentages, sail by feel.

The P19 mx is do able, I have beaten boat for boat a well sailed Nacra 6.O na around the triangle, and cleaned an I - 20 & I -18 off wind in distance racing, but that was a glory day.

Keep it going, and one word , listen to those that sail the boat!

Kevin

1. It is good you replied,.....since you are the nacra dealer too,.......ther is NO WAY that P-19 MX is rated the same as a N5.8!!!!! Speak up boy!

2. For everyone else, Kevin bought the first I-20 in the Virgin Islands,...and cleaned everyones clock,.....you can see him in the July 2001 Sailing World centerfold,...great action picture

Have you ever really sailed ????

We have all seen the photo of you by the P16.

Sailing is not about numbers and percetanges, it is about the feel of the boat in your hands, not about 33% less of this or 2.5 % more of that.

It is not a logrythmic scale or buleprint.

You may have handed him some numbers, his time on the water with the boat, will be the defining factor ... not 7% less downhaul.

Sailing is not a mystery, with the answer held by a select few, it is a sport and and art, it is mastering the unseen ... the wind.

Figure that one out with your slide ruler.

ONCE AGAIN,

1. I am highly thankful to all the help,...and all of it did help.

2. In this case,..everyones input was right,...and valuable.

3. For where I sail, the US Virgin Islands,...I am the only Uni rig in the territories,...ie, NO HELP AVAILABLE!

4. YES,...there is 'feel' and taking your mind 'outside' the boat to be aware of the surrounding conditions,...so true!

5. YES,....there is science to it too

6. Put it ALL together,....results in making me thankful to all..

Actually I think that Bruce most benefited from Phil's comment and you just put him

in his place

by stating that Bruce should only listen to people who actually sail the damn I-17 R version 2 sailarea up by 1,5 revision 10 upgrade 2 and spindoctormode = high.

And no Chris I don't sail, I hate americans and I do love the I-17.

Nice talking to you

Wouter

And we eat cheese burgers, sail on boats with spinakers, drive on the wrong side of the raod, get sun burns, have un protected sex, leave our boats to rot in the sun, don't floss, put the sail on upside down, have revolutions, elect presidents that have affairs, suffer from a lack of stress, and have a damn good time doing it !

Bigger... better.... but most importantly... FASTER... the good ole American way!!!

And once we get done sailing our boats with more sail area we finish the day with a quarterpounder with cheese and a Budweiser!!! (well not me... I've got to get my weight back down to ~170 lbs before H20's in Tampa.... but I used to!)
