I've always locked the mast downwind, but is it necessary? not locking it would make gybes faster. If it's really blowing and your sailing deep, I think you need to lock it.
Also which depowers the boat the most, mast rotation all the way out(rotator arm parallel to front beam) or all the way in(rotator arm parallel with boom), I've always thought it was all the way in.
