What is the purpose of the 13th man and how do they fill this position. What is the history of the 13th man?

Technically, the crew on an IACC yacht consists of 16 men, and there may be a 17th man (person) who is not related to the regular activities of the team in any way. Frequently it is a representative of a sponsor, especially later in the series or in the AC itself. The 17th man is not allowed to participate in the race in any way.
