managing chaos
One of the spots on the course that I have the most difficulty negotiating gracefully is A mark roundings in a breeze. On a spin boat how do you manage all of the things that need to get done (dagger boards, jib, downhaul, rotation)? I've pretty much got it together except for the leeward dagger board. When rounding A in double trap conditions, What is the best order to accomplish tasks in?
That depends. What kind of boat, what wind etc
downhaul, jib and rotation are things that can be done after you get the spin up and are powered up, or can be done before you get to the offset mark. I would say crew first pulls up daggers but if it is windy then your daggers are already up. most important part is to keep the boat moving and get the chute up asap. The crew can give the spin sheet to the skipper for a few seconds to then do the remaining things.
Karl you can ask Kathy tomorrow when you see her but from the back of the boat it looks like she is doing this:
- in off the trap
- windward board up
- rotator off (we have a quick release)
- spin up
- I sheet and trim until her check list is complete
- cunningham off
- jib eased
- leeward board up
- out on the wire
- sheet is handed off
Of course I'm providing words of encouragement with enthusiasm, things like
quick like a bunny sweetie
or words to that affect which typically triggers and an inaudible response. Word to the wise, don't ask her what she said it's usually something you don't want to hear.
Your mileage and verbal exchanges may vary.
Bring your 'A' game tomorrow pretty boy.
I do like that feature. Do you know if anyone has done it on the infusion and does it work well?
