[#29118]

a few months ago i bought the peices of a 1979 NACRA 18 SQ. I now have a working boat. kinda. I know i'll have several questions. one thing at a time.

rudder foil/blade. the boat didn't have them. I now have aquired two sets. one set has a much larger/thicker chord.

what are the correct foils for the boat? what are the differences? which ones are better? etc?

stick with NACA 12...are the foils original NACRA products? - if so make sure they are not flatish on one side. There was a molding problem with earlier versions of the rudder for the boat, and I feel the 18m2 was borrowing parts from the 5.2 and 5.8. The 5.2s suffered until we were able to get our hands on the Aussie foils which I am guessing were 13 - 15 NACA.

Modern foils are higher aspect and have less thickness. Jake has been in on this. I'm just glad to see one headed back to the beach. There is one at Birmingham Sailing Club that should be in the National Sailing Hall of Fame, and that is a fact.

Jim Leonard wastes no effort or gram of fat in his restoration work. Ya'll oughta see the Stilleto 23 he has restored. He does not allow black anodized aluminum go without a nice chrome polished appearance. His 5.2 looked NASCAR in the mid seventies.

Best of fortune with your 18m2 affair of honor.

Take the boat sailing with both set on board, swap them out and see what set works better..

Also, M6.0 is the for a Mystere 6.0?

Thanks for all the info i'll try to get some pics. I have learned that the thicker naca 12ish are the original blades from a 5.2. and have the constuction issues as described above. I will try them both out.

Ventucky, yes a mystery cat.

Sq looks great
I put an I 20 sail on mine as well. Very close dimensions.
Light weight mast had trouble flattening the main up wind in a blow.
I built my own boom. Went to a local scrap yard and bought similar section
