[#17364]

I just bought a Nacra 5.2, older model but in good shape. I have seen in the assembly manual, and in pics online that there is a shock cord assembly of a sort that holds the daggers in place. It looks like there is hardware on each hull to fasten the cords to... I don't seem to have those on my boat, I don't see any way to secure the daggers at all...... Am I missing something here? Was there an alternate system that didn't need any points of attachment? Any help would be useful, thanks!

Buddy

There were/are two systems (that I know of):

1. Bungee runs from the top of the daggerboard forward to a "j" looking hook mounted on the deck. This puts forward pressure on the board and keeps raised to the level you set it.

2. Bungee runs from the the edge of the tramp (via and eye strap) outbound, turns 90 degrees around the front edge of the board (with a pad on this section of the bungee) and then 90 degrees back toward the tramp on the back end of the board to a "j" hook on the edge of the tramp. Sort of forms a C around the board exterting sideways pressure on the board to keep it raised.

Sounds like a) you are missing the "J" hook in option 1 or b) are overlooking the eye strap and "j' hooks mounts for optino 2.

Thanks Tom, I think you have it with the J-hook option. Seems like I remember seeing a small hook on each full, forward of the boards...I will check when I get home tonight...thanks very much.... the manual seems to only indicate the other method

Tom has the descrip right, but aaaah! don't do it.

The 'newer' style NACRA roller 'daggerboard holders' work SO much better and don't take up deck space where you should be sitting. Better yet, go with friction tape in the dagger well. In either case, use the holes in the board as a stopper, eg run a bit of line thru the holes with fig-8 knots.

Look for pics of 90s models NACRA. Where are you?

Yep. Option 1 (the original style) is a problem for crew maneuverability, but works fine. Option 2 works fine and still has topside controls. Option 3 would be carpet or tape (or something abrasive enough to hold the board up, but not damage the board) inside the daggerboard well. This option might take a few trial and error runs to get it just right and may require more ongoing maintenance.

I have the opposite problem on my new boat - my daggerboards float, so they tend to pop up if you do not push them all the way down.

And option 1 is a real ripper of neoprene.
