Have a problem, how do I get rid of port weather helm? Boat sails like a bandit on starboard with two finger touch, but when I go to port I have to really fight it.

dsnell,

The most common cause, but not the only cause, would be one rudder not either locking down or kicking as far forward as the other rudder.

As you are experiencing the helm on port tac the leading edge of your starboard rudder is probably not as far forward as the port rudder when in their normal sailing position.

Try putting rudders down when the boat is on the trailer and if you measure the same angle to the leading edge.

Apply a little pressure on each leading edge (as the water would when sailing) and note if the starboard's leading edge moves back more than the port one.

Adjust so they are the same angle and stay the same angle under load. Note the further forward the leading edge is of the pivot point (pintel pin) the less you will feel the helm and the further back the more weather helm you will feel.

As I said this is not the only cause but the most likely.

I hope it helps.

Phill

I used to have a boat with a similar problem. Turns out the shrouds were different lengths. To check, use the main halyard and touch it to each chain plate.
