In 1962 I bought and restored a '29 Model A Ford. When I first brought it to the island is was one of the best looking cars here. But, as of last fall it was about the 2nd rattiest. So, I decided to renovate it again -- overhaul the engine, new interior, new fenders and new paint job. It was supposed to be finished this spring.., but upon arrival it looked just like it did when I left it, except there was no engine in it.
Now, understand, I had to have a parade car. After some extensive research I found a replica 1929 Mercedes Gazelle Roadster in Pennsylvania. It is so beautiful and just glistens. It is really a lot more fun than the Model A.
The funny part is Cody our wonder dog. He rides in the back seat in the parades and plops his butt up on the back of the seat as if he were a celebrity or something.

Cody's Site is below, and if you have already seen the rest of his site, for the Mercedes section, just click on [Cody and Mercedes at Put-in-Bay]

There are about 130 antique cars here at Put-in-Bay, and it's the perfect place for them because the highest speed limit on the island is 35 mph. There is an antique car parade through town every Sunday. The purists have fun putting down us replicar people, but that's okay, because we're all good friends.

Betty Bliss is my sister and an awesome sailor. She is a past Hobie 18 Women's World Champion and also the Wave World Women's Champion. Her husband Dick crewed for her for many years, on a Tornado and then a Prindle 18 and then a Hobie 18. Now they both are racing Hobie Waves in our fleet here at Put-in-Bay.

My brother-in-law, Dick Bliss, is not related to Rick Bliss, sailing guru of New England.
My Bliss is quite a guy, however. He is in the Hall of Fame for wrestling at Ohio State U. and has been named Coach of Year at least three times for the State of Ohio as high school wrestling coach.

He in not only related to me, he is a great friend.
Rick

Despite not being related to Rick Bliss, Dick must be a very fine fellow indeed! What with being married to Mary's sister, being a successful wrestler, and especially being a good coach! I lean towards crediting my nephew's middle school wrestling coach with saving his life! Great fun to watch the matches. He got him to qualify for the nationals! A good coach is one of the best things in life.

Dick Bliss is most certainly an outstanding fellow and a coach of the highest order. And while I was mostly water boy and sparring partner, in a wild twist of fate, Dick Bliss was my Wrestling Coach in High School at Aurora, Ohio in the late 80's long before I knew anything about sailing or had ever heard of Rick White and Mary Wells. No kidding. I remember him bringing in a Hobie 18 and setting it up once in a practice field when I was (I think) a sophmore. He has countless successful lives to his credit.

Now that seems just right. What a small world it is.

It's good to see that Cody is still living the life of a King. I knew from the day I took that first photo on his webpage that he would grow up to be like a family member to you guys.
We were on Kelly's Island in July and I took this photo of Put-in-Bay at Sunset.

The rest of the photos from that trip are at http://www.pbase.com/jmhoying/kelleys05

What a beautiful picture, Jack. Did you use some kind of filter? And the rest of the pictures are beautiful, too, as usual. You should get a job working for a travel magazine.

But why didn't you sail over to see us at Put-in-Bay? You could have pulled out at the yacht club -- we have wheels that will fit your boat.

About the pictures of the deer. Do they actually have deer on Kelley's Island? Maybe that explains how Millie got here. And maybe that explains how she got pregnant.

Mary,
That photo is pretty much straight out of the camera. I did a little cropping, etc, but the color is close to what we saw. I think I took over 40 photos of that sunset.
We had intentions to at least circle Put-in-Bay, but I'm afraid that my little motor got more use than our sails. One day we sailed to the tip of Pelee Island in Canadian waters, but the wind died completely and we ended up motoring back. The weather was beautiful, except for the lack of wind.
I think that Kellys Island has almost 50% of it's land set aside as natural areas, so their deer population is fairly large. That deer in the photo was in the old quarry near the glacial grooves, but we saw deer on other parts of the island also. I imagine that in the winter, the deer can jump on one of the hundreds of golf carts on the island and head out over the ice to the neighboring islands. 😉
Maybe we'll make it over to Put-in-Bay for a visit next Summer.
Jack
