Subject: Ruff RuffRider.

Looks like it is going to be a ruff one this year, unless the

conditions change rapidly (not predicted to do so)...

Thom,

I checked the Natl weather Service site, for SPI (that's South Padre Island), and by Sat. it's forecast at SE winds @15, with a 30% chance of rain. Sorry, don't know how to add it here.

One boat abandoned the race Wed. A f27 being pulled by a big Uhaul did a 180 on Highway 77 south of Victoria. There was no significant damage, it was a miricle that it did not roll. They took this as a hint from God and went home

Just got in from Ruff Rider. There was rain around, but the wind was manageable (at least where I was in the fleet.) Saturday's 11 am start was postponed until 12:30 for lack of wind, then the boats were allowed to drift on the theory that 1/2 a knot of boatspeed toward the halfway point was better than sitting on the beach. The first boat to the halfway point arrived around 7 pm, and the last was towed in about 1 am. Sunday was windier, probably in the 10-20 range, and the last boat in made it by a bit after 4 pm. There were times that I couldn't see either end of the fleet because of rain squalls, but all in all, I don't think any truly dangerous conditions were experienced.

Hello Carl-

Could you be me specific about what happened? Did the trailer break loose from the truck or did the truck lose its steering? Or did the trailer start weaving and force them into a turn?

Please understand, it was raining and I was preparing to leave the dock for a race when they came limping in.

They were pulling an F27 with what looked like the largest van Uhaul rents. It was raining and windy, They hit a slick spot and were hit by a cross wind. The truck and trailer did a 180 and ended up in the median. About the time they stopped, a tractor trailer did the same thing, except hit a drainage pipe and crunched its' cab.

There was no apparent damage to either the truck or the boat. However after the acident the truck would no go over 45 mph.

As I understand it while they were doing the 180 waiting for the truck to roll is when they decided to go home.
