Hi all,

season have startet and we are looking at our performance again after too many years outside the regatta scene.

With the adoption of smartphones I was wondering if you have tips to a nice app for tracking and speed. Perhaps even some analysis functions like average VMG, favoured side of course, favoured end of starting line etc?
Back in the days we used a GPS and some simple free software for analysis after sailing and racing. With smartphones surely there is some software for this available?

The iregatta app works well, I've had it for a couple years and played with it a few times.

The phone however doesn't work too well around it. The battery life on the phone is very short while running the app. The screen is nearly impossible to see in the full sun and the touch screen is about useless with wet fingers.

That's been my experience with the apps for this kind of stuff too. I have a velocitek prostart that I use on my J boat that shows speed, shifts, and allows you to set the start line (giving you distance). I think you can really go nutz with that data but I have found that having a speed readout has really helped me transition to the monohull faster. We haven't been using the start line info lately because it's pretty distracting.

I have one of those

waterproof

plastic boxes with a silicone cover for the touchscreen. I have not really tested it when wet but will do so.

Phone in a dry bag has proven to be a little too difficult to use as a tactical device so far IME, but... I have been using RaceQs to go back and compare ourselves to other boats that day. Recently also added KattackMobile and am interested to see what it does.

As far as the original question, I've tried several apps and have ended up only keeping one or two b/c they didn't suck as bad as the rest. but it looks like I got suckered into installing a couple of new ones and I don't remember which is which...
