I'm looking at tactical compasses. Any suggestions or thoughts?

If you like the TackTick, which version and why?

Tacktick Micro $499 - small, compass and countdown timer functions only, bulletproof - no backlight, batteries are not replaceable

Velocitek - $499 - countdown timer, speed, vmg, compass, distance to starting line, downloadable data tracks, replaceable batteries, as more features are being added, you can update your unit's software to the latest version - no backlight

TackTick Race Master - $999.99 - countdown timer, compass, header/lift indicator, backlight, replaceable batteries

I'm a fan of the micro for bouy racing and Velocitek for distance racing

There's another good choice:

[Linked Image]

Has backlight, start line distance, rechargeable lithium battery, WAYPOINTS & ROUTES, true wind determination (your tacking angle/2).

The Velocitek SC-1 is $399. The Velocitek guys are based on the other side of the island. They brought five over to try some new software and put them on five leaners during a regatta. They worked very well, have a large and readable display, no moving exposed parts and run on four AA bateries.

We liked it enough to buy one for the YC's Olson 30.

And we carry both on this site. Velocitek is here:

and the price is $399

One thing that I didn't like about the velocitek, and they might have fixed this, is that you HAD to take the batteries out of it to turn it off and on.

Pain in the butt.

Holding the Mode and Minus buttons for 3 secs will turn the unit on and off.

Mode/Minus only puts the unit in a hibernate mode. Leave it sitting for a week like that and your batteries will be dead by the next weekend.

prices went up as of 09/01 to $499
