Someone was inquiring about the 2010 Dates. They are interested in crewing and want to put in for time off. Have they been set yet or anything tentative?

I spoke with Chuck a couple weeks ago. The event will be the week following Mother's Day Sunday. It is still up in the air whether the race will run Sunday through Friday or, like last year, Monday through Saturday. Finishing in Tybee on Saturday was great with the beach packed with people. I am thinking that will be the case again this year.

NOR is about to be published. May 10-15, 2010, same checkpoints. There was talk about adding a St. Simon's Island checkpoint, but the logistics were looking dubious. So we're going back to the same places as last year.

There will be no open class. F18 and N20 catamarans only - 8 make a class.

What if a group of open class boats wanted to shadow the main fleet. Would they be able to utilize the support and logistics? How much interest from an open fleet would be required to get someone to listen?
I've been down this path with Chuck once before and it didn't work out but I would be interested to see if it could become an option.

I would doubt it, Windy Hill. Logistically space and resources are a challenge anyway. Your best bet would be to charter a boat from someone and just enter the race. Also like wildtsail said there is no on the water support.

Nor off the water support. <img src="<>/crazy.gif" alt="crazy" title="crazy" height="15" width="15" /> As far as what the sailors see...they pretty much make sure we have a start line and finish line setup and try to make us round the right marks at Canaveral. The things we don't see are lots of beach permits and block reservations with hotels.

Everything else is up to the teams.

But...what Todd says - charter a 20 or F18 and do it legit!

They would get no logistics help. The logistics are up to each team. Official race teams do support one another - for example I run a repair service for Lee Wicklund's bows <img src="<>/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" height="15" width="15" />
I'm not sure what 'Shadow' means. This is a race - if someone who is not in the race gets in my way I'm not gonna be a happy camper. Personally I prefer limiting the number of classes - and F-18/Nacra 20 covers a large majority of the long distance racing community.

Chris.

Hey! Me too! that is if, by repair, you mean a finger shaped indentation in fresh fiberglass.

Your finger print kept bleeding through the paint. <img src="<>/grin.gif" alt="grin" title="grin" height="15" width="15" />

Without Chris's beachside repair service this year, I'd have been out of the Tybee and GT. It's getting kind of funny, the last one, I didnt even have to ask him to do it. I went to get a beer and when I came back to just look at the damage, Chris was almost done with it.
I'm hoping my reputation now will keep more teams behind me.

I understand what you guys are saying.

In the current economy I would be lucky to raise the money to campaign my own boat, add the cost of a charter and its not an option. Unless a charter is much less than I would expect.

I'm just not as interested in doing this on an I-20 or F-18, I would rather do it old style on a H16 or TheMightyHobie18. You know, the way it was originally. I was thinking a stock TheMightyHobie18, which I now have as well as the frankenboat.

I will instead look at the Cuba run and see if I can raise money to campaign that event. Thanks

And I wasn't clear about what I meant by logistics and support or shadowing.
Shadowing, starting after and behind the main fleet, no chance of getting in the way of the pros.
Logistics and Support, I meant a start line, finish line and access to hotel blocks, radio contact and waypoints for gps.

Nothing else!

You won't find me waiting up the extra hours waiting for a Hobie 16... I missed too much sleep as it was.

I'd say the day we ended in Cocoa a hobie 16 would have been at lest 6 hours later... that'd be 9am... with the next start at 10am... close reaching with lots of apparent wind in light breeze... a 16 would have been DOGGIN it.
The next day to Daytona probably would have been 4 or 5am...
possible with a 3 man team like they used to do it but no way you could go on that little sleep with 2 guys.

Plus, keep in mind that the RC is up getting ready ahead of the racers each morning, and still on station when the last boat comes in. Then it's off to the room for scoring/posts/pictures. I was surprised that it was actually more work to handle the shore-side admin than it was to manage a small team program.

On another note, while website stuff gets sorted, teams should prepare themselves for a new requirement for each boat to carry a Spot device. They proved invaluable for locating teams who had them last year. I think Craig had worked out a group discount. That would be something good to put together now rather than later.

I have been working closely with TopoFusion.com. They started TrackLeaders.com to cover their SPOT tracking venture. We did a lot of refining during the Tybee last year and it works great as long as the Spot unit is tracking properly.

We used it for Hiram's Haul a few weeks ago and will use it again for Steeplechase coming up.

They are now renting units but if you have your own Spot unit you can be added at no charge. Keep checking West Marine, they were offering huge discounts earlier this year.
