WANTED!!! - Ashby a-cat mainsail
Jake,
Sorry to hear it. Why can't they ever take that 5 year old main that you've been meaning to replace for about 2 years.
I think a sail is equivilent to a man's horse. Here in MO we still hang horse thieves. So if you find someone dangling from a palm tree with two black eyes down there you know what happened.

The more the know about it the better.
And maybe put up a reward or something?
Done...overwith...time required for my involvement is beyond the reward...sucks? yes. Find the culprit?..prolly not...I'm moving on an happy with my 14th place finish.
I figured I might as well chronicle my insurance experience with Progressive on the claim for the sail...so here goes...I have been really impressed with Progressive Insurance to date although I have not had a claim. I like to keep notes on these sort of things so I figured I might as well share.
This morning at about 10:15am I called the national Progressive claim number and got to a rep about 20 seconds after entering my policy number. I gave her some details about the incident but I left the police report number in my car...said I would have to get that back to them (she said
no problem
). Everything was entered and she said a claim person would contact me within two hours.
I got back to my desk at 11am after a meeting and my wife had sent me an email that the local claim person had already called the house after trying my work number and my cell phone number (I was in a meeting and my PDA phone is with our IT department for some data problem). She said he wanted to know how much to write the check for....
so far so good...I don't have a replacement quote yet so it looks like I'm going to be the delay in the process at this point. I called the guy back but got a voicemail...I'll wait to leave him a message until I have my cell phone back this afternoon.
Jake
Called and left message for the local claims guy
Dennis
this afternoon at 1:15p and left my cell number (now that I have my phone back). I probably don't have the info he needs but wanted to check on what information I need to provide him so I can get it all to him at once.
(I'm leaving last names out of this board for protection of the innocent!).
Dennis calls me back at 2:15pm...I just need to send him the invoice/estimate for replacement and a copy of the police report. I explained that I purchased this sail at a time when the exchange rate was low and with a group of five sailors so we could share a combined / reduced shipping expense. I was concerned that because the exchange rate today isn't as favorable and that the shipping may not be able to be shared like was done originally - it may cost a bit more to actually replace it. He explained that they don't normally consider shipping expenses but that they would see what was possible once all the numbers were on the table. Nice guy - prompt responses. I'm pleased thus far.
I am sure that when I first purchased the policy for my F18 (which was then transferred to the A-cat) that it was a
replacement value
policy and not an
agreed value
policy. Dennis said it was an agreed value policy...which means they cover me for what I paid for the sail and not what it costs me to replace it. It could be a difference when dealing with the whole boat vs. a small part of the boat or something...I'll figure out what's up with that soon enough when I have a chance later to research my policy details.
The value on my a-cat is similar - I pay $115 per year...but I also have a second boat, a Hunter 23 monohull, insured with them too at about the same rate and similar value. Both plans cover racing, the trailers, and towing.
I am in no way promoting one insurance company over another. I just thought you guys might find the experience interesting as it happens since it's something you hope to never have to use. It's the first insurance claim I've ever had against my own insurance boat/auto/home or otherwise.
I have found Progressive to be pretty on the ball with regard to this stuff.
One thing I have seen is when people fill out applications online, they don't always look closely at what they are applying for. They look for what costs the least.
Replacement cost policies are more expensive than actual value, but who but an insurance geek would know the difference between the policies?
The other biggie?
How much insurance should I buy
? You'd have to know the depreciated market price. Overestimating a boat's value just means you're paying more premium. Understating the value puts you in a co-insurance penalty situation (meaning you won't get as much as you think on the claim payment)....
So unless you have the marine
blue-book
with your boat listed, I'd contact your agent or some reliable industry expert to help...

I will look into them.... thanks
PS
supposedly
they will pay out the full amount of my policy (7K)regardless of actual value, depreciation, replacement cost (minus the $500 deductable)... for the first 3 years.... this is part of their
premium
plan.... but i wouldn't be surprised to learn there were
factors i wasn't aware of
that mitigate that somehow....
My coverage is for agreed value (more than what i paid for it) and is only $136 a year through state farm. I have my home and car insurance through them as well.
I recently switched from the gowerie (US Sailing) plan because they wouldn't increase my coverage. With what has happened with the mast in the N20 class, I felt that I needed to get more coverage so that if something DID happen, my boat wouldn't be totaled with me sitting with a check that wouldn't even come CLOSE to buying a replacement 20. So now I'm happy with State farm.
OK, it took a while, but I finally got the receipt and everything in order for the sails to send to the insurance guy. Monroe County Sheriff's department was astonishingly efficient at sending me the report several weeks ago. I made one phone call and spoke to one person with my case number and she had emailed me a PDF of the report within minutes. Talked to the local progressive adjuster in town this morning and faxed over the report, the receipt, and the current exchange rate between the AUS dollar and the US dollar. I was honest that I actually paid a little less for the sail because the exchange rate was better in early December but he said don't worry about it and I used today's rate...the difference was about $100 in my favor (but it will probably cost me a little more than that difference to replace the sail with the current exchange rate and shipping). Everything was faxed over this morning and I have a feeling I will have a check by week's end.
As for the agreed vs. replacement value on the policy, I confirmed that my boat policy is replacement value but that does not extend to this kind of claim. If the boat was a complete loss, the policy will cover what it takes to replace the boat with something of equal or greater value should an equal replacement not be able to be located.
