[#15344]

I was wondering what happened to the Worrell 1000. I tried to search for it but all I could come up with is that it might have been bought out and is under a different name. I know it usually runs this time of year. The reason I am asking is because I will be in the outer banks a lot over the next few months and want to suprise my girlfriend(Christina Worrell) by being at the beach when the boats come in. I am not sure she even knows it is not the Worrell anymore because she has been away at college for a few years now. Any information is very helpful.

you're digging up some old wounds here. Perhaps re-openning a can that we wanted to keep closed... but I guess someone has to tell you.

The 2003 running of the Worrel 1000 was supposed to be run on chartered boats, with a cash purse for the winners. All this for a $5000 per team entry fee. Lots of people didn't think the numbers added up, but sent in their entry fees anyways.

Low and behold, the race never happened, and Mike Worrell made off with the entry fees. There was a lawsuit, it got nasty, basically this is all history that we wish could just get swept under the rug so we can move on.

Speaking of moving on, the race that took its place is the Tybee 500, running from Hollywood FL to Tybee Island Georgia. Wont be going by the Outer Banks, but hey, I'll be out sailing around Currituck/Duck in the I20 3rd week in June. (if the boat is still in one piece from the T500)

Okay dude, if she is family of Mike Worrell, you may want to stay away from that subject, trust me on this one. Im sure others can post all the info about the former Worrell 1000, but lets just say it is defunct, and now there is a race from Hollywood to Tybee Island Ga called the Tybee 500. Thier website has not been updated(whats up with that>), but it has all the info about the race. Last year they ran a sister race called the OBX 500, as the combibed was called the Atlantic 1000, but it had few participants and will not be run this year.
Take her to Hollywood Beach Fla instead, and live the good life for a few days, lots of exciting beach landings.

Sorry guys. Stepped out to lunch. I had know idea. I think her father was Chris Worrell and I think I remember her saying he gave his share of the rights to the race over to Mike. He passed years ago. Sorry didnt want to make anybody mad.

I searched the thread about it and couldnt find anything. Probably my search skills, sorry again

We should also mention that there was an ensuing lawsuit against Mike Worrell too.

If you all will let me switch gears. It's a shame what has happened to the worrell, I really enjoyed my limited involvement in it's last running with Carl Roberts and David Lennard, But I'd like to take the opportunity to say thank you to your girlfriend and her family, barring its last couple of years the worrell 1000 was the mecca of distance catamaran racing so credit where it is due. I know it has been many years but sorry for the loss of her father.

Respectfully
C Zander

I've wondered at the time why the Worrell entry fee was a whopping $5,000, while the Texel's entry fee is only a few lousy Euros. How come THEY can have a decent race for much less money??

The Texel gets a lot of sponsorship. Secondly, the aforementioned $5000 was to include a hotel room at every stop up the coast (something like 11 or 12 nights at the various stops up the eastern coast), a charter boat, and a rental truck to pull trailer and gear.

Short of combing thru all the old Worrell 1000 threads: Did the teams of 2003 ever get anything of their entrance fee back? I know the Chicago team (Team Moxie practiced on our beach with their Bimare in 2002), but we never saw them again afterwards - so we couldn't ask them what happened.

No none of the teams got any of their money back. The race's reputation, and Mike Worrells, have been destroyed. I believe the general theory is that Mike had used the money that came in to pay previous debts and never had all of the sponsorship in place that was needed anyway (this is from what I got reading the forums - I have no association with anyone involved, just a fan of the race).
This is a very sore subject for a lot of the people on the list and many really don't like to talk about it or bring it up.
