"Ya Gotta Regatta" is on 8/15 and 16! Surfside Beach, SC
Charlie has decided to do it again! The mayor of Surfside beach has agreed to host the event and Sail and Ski will be the sponsoring beachcat store. If any of you have attended the
Ya Gotta Regatta
in the past you can remember the good food and awesome door prizes. This year Charlie says he want to do bouy races one day and lemans start distance races the second day. I would hope to see many rookie sailors as well and there may be clinics/discussions/training as well. I will add details as they are provided.
Can some one get the dates on the EMSA site for me as well?
I would like the whole thing to be lemans start, round a mark, blast down the beach, round a mark and land to finish. That way you use the waves twice and keep it all within site of the tourist/spectators. Screw a bunch of sitting at an imaginary line waiting on a flag sequence a mile offshore. Charlie wants it to be fun for experienced sailors and newbies as well.
What would you guys see as the most fun racing on the coast?
Buoy racing in front of a popular beach with a pier can be very nice for spectators too remember.
Distance racing is fun just because, well, its just fun - but yeah a mix of both would draw more racers probably. I know a lot of buoy guys would opt out if it was distance only. Maybe.
I'm still waiting to get the details. I don't know much about Surfside Beach but its not nearly as crowded as Myrtle and doesn't have the huge oceanfront condos every 3 feet. I would think there is beach access near one of the piers. Hopefully I can get more info today.
this was posted to the EMSA mailing list:
The hard part of putting this on--- we can get the boats on the south beach access--17th ave. south-- hopefully leave the trailors on the beach--still being worked on that--parking is the tough situation--this is no r v hookups in surfside-- there are places to the north and south--just a few miles-- parking on the beach front is tight -- we will be parking on the side the road-- we are working on maybe getting permission to park on some empty lots down there--there will be a surfing contest going on at the same time just 2 blocks north of us-- 2blocks north of that will be kayak demontrations-- paddle boarding--kite surfing. this will be a true beach festival
As you can see there will be alot going on-- alot of stuff to work out-- a little bit of time to do it-- but it looks like it will be alot of fun.
Start firing back your questions as quick as you can so I can get the answers
thanks for your time
Ted
Things are moving along well with this event. The race will be limited to 20 boats, maybe raised to 25 if possible. If you are definately interested contact Sail and Ski ASAP to reserve your spot. There will be no food this year so entry fees are pretty low, $25 double is what I heard. $25 for a race, 2 t-shirts and a chance at a trophy is a deal! Bouy races on Sat and a distance run on Sun. Gonna be FUN!
Surfside is just south of Huntington Beach state park, Or Myrtle Beach State park, cant remember the exact name. Camping is relatively cheap at the State park, and distance is minimal. You could land at the upper end of the State park or use the ramp at Springmaid beach and leave the boats on that beach, with a quick sail south to the race site. Springmaid resort is close(no camping) and very inexpensive.
Surfside is north of Huntington beach State park(about 10miles), but very near Myrtle beach State Park.

Springmaid would still be the economical and close hotel, Myrtle Beach State park would be the closest camping with Hookups, unless Ocean Lakes has an opening.

The postings from ted didnt really descibe the exact regatta area, so not sure how close these 2 places are, but Surfside is not that big of an area, so these 2 places should be within a 5-6 miles of the Launch.
Sorry I dont have all the answers!
I just signed up myself... Charlie was not in, but the guy at Sail and Ski said the launch site is 13th st South Surfside Beach..... (the earlier posting said 17th St S, but I could not find that on the Google maps since it only went to 16th)
As for hotel... I'm using Priceline. I just came back from Busch Gardens with the family and got a room at the Courtyard Marriott for $50 /night. Normal rates were $150.
I figure I don't need a room on the water, I'll see enough of it during the day.
Any H16s going... Loyd can't make it. My daughter would like to do it with me on the H16, but I would rather do this event on the F18... Not sure she is ready for the spin in the ocean, so I may be looking for a crew.
I'm registered and JD Soloman and his son will be there on a 16. It may be the spin 16 but probably not. Charlie is still working out details. This is a true beach festival that is shaping up. There will be a surf comp, kite boarding, kayaks, paddle boards and lots of spectators. Great exposure for cat sailing! Family and friends should come and support it if possible. It won't be boring for the beach crew like most races are. Contact Sail and Ski 843-626-7245.
I got my crew worked out... I'll be there on the F18. Here is the latest email that went out earlier today.
