Does anyone know the difference or conversion? I told race committee that my rating was 77.5 for my Prindle 16, which I believe it Portsmouth, but I think they wanted PHRF for a fun race this weekend.
I've been sort of interested in this too...wikipedia has the best summary that I can understand...take a look. Formulas are provided and it also shows how the two are related. But if I understand it correctly, portsmouth yardstick numbers are adjusted annually with empirical data (race results) and your number may vary from race to race due to estimated wind speed. PHRF is not generally used by beachcats and dinghies, it's a "Yacht Racing" handicap system.
PHRF number is assigned to individual boats, not types of boats like Portsmouth, by the regional PHRF organization that your club has agreed to use.
So you would need to apply for a PHRF number in order to race in a PHRF event.
