I went sailing today and my battens are ripping through the sail at the batten pocket..the sail is old but i dont know how old because i bought it from someone. Is this just happening because it is old? Please help me out

Could be old... Could be wearing against the shrouds... Could be the battens are not tied in tight enough. That would allow them to pop out of the luff cap and poke through the sail up front. Where is it wearing?

its ripping through right outside the luff cap, so i guess i will have to tie them tighter
