H16 jib upgrade and rudder casting questions
I want to upgrade the JIB system to a low profile system with the Trentec jib traveler car.
Wich should I use:
1. The Cam cleat system or the Lance cleat system? What are the pros and cons of each? Lance cleat obviously limits the position of where they can be cleated, opinions? Will I be limited while out on the wire?
2. I had to drill the rudder adjuster screw out of the thread, Im sure I did some damage to the thread itself. Do I need new rudder castings? or can I just tap the threads and use a diferent adjuster screw? maybe a home depot version?
OK, here's the lance cleat system:
And here's the Tren-Tec cars:
The holes in the Tren-Tec cars (from left to right on the port side - starboard side will be reversed) are for 1) Control Line; 2) Sheet end (fed through from front and tie figure 8 knot); 3) Sheet turning (sheet returns from block on clew, through this hole, then to cleat mounted on crossbar); and 4) Shock cord (attached to other Tren-Tec car on starboard side).
To help visualize the setup, here's how the current stock system is rigged:
If you look carefully, the small blue line is the control - on the Tren-Tec system, this would be tied to the outboard hole. The sheet end (yellow knot) would be in the first large hole. The sheet would pass through the second large hole. The return shock cords (barely visible in the photo because they're black) attach to the inboard small hole.
Now, back to your original question - Lance vs. Swivel system:
I've always used a lance system (or something similar) for the following reasons:
1) It's much cheaper (and stock on new boats)
2) Having 4 swivel cleats mounted on the front crossbar is confusing to the crew (they all look alike).
3) It's a lot of stuff to have on the crossbar, especially in lighter air when the skipper and crew are crowding the crossbar to keep their weight forward.
4) The jib traveller is rarely adjusted from the wire. The lance system is difficult to uncleat from the wire, but you can still pull the traveller out.
I hope this helps.
