HC16 - to go or not to go for spinnaker?
Hello,
I would appreciate if you can share with me your opinion about spinnaker for HC16.
I have possibility to buy one, only sail with bag (hobie original and brand new), without pole and other stuff for USD 220.
Someone told me that spi helps to keep bows up so it prevents pitchpoling. Is it true ?

We had one racing for the first time a few weekends ago at the Gunpowder regatta. The boat looked great and the crew is beating his dad up to get one for their boat. John McLaughlin had a ball with it.

Fritz, I don't have your contact info.
Could you email me mschneid@msn.com
Im guessing you haven't sailed with a spinnaker. Well the truth about spinnakers is, yes they keep the nose up but then again if you drop the spinnaker is a big gust because your crew cant hold it well say hello water. It does keep the nose up but not that much. If your out for fun and you have a bit of money to spend then go for the spinnaker because its a great thing to learn and you will have alot more fun on a reach plus you can do the wild thing. The bad side to a spinnaker is it costs money, you dont sail as fast up wind (close haul) and you point higher down wind (reaching) But then again you gain where you loose speed. Its a 50 50 split to go or not go so flip a coin!
Piotr,
this was a prototype spi used and sailed on Guadeloupe 2000.
The new spi is taller that the one on the picture.
Did I send you the pics from Travemünde?
see also www.travemuenderwoche.de then go Bildergalerie.
You should see some there.
