well, having two infants really slows down your sailing time. my wife and i finally got a chance to go out and flip the boat several times this weekend. the only problem was that we both were concerned with the length of the mainsheet when we capsized.

when sailing i never seem to use anywhere near the full lenth of line. the mainsail traveler has its own line, so the main sheet is not attached at the end. it seems to me that we would only need enough sheet to allow the mainsail all the way out with just a few feet to spare, not 5 to 10 feet.

any comments and suggested lenght would be appreciated

Most folks just use one Line for the mainsheet, and use the spare end for the traveler if there is enough length.(42 for 5:1 and 46 feet for 6:1 is common)

However a separate line for the traveler could probably work just as well, if a knot is tied on the cleat end. If you can ease the sail all the way out with a few feet to spare, then that sounds about right.

This web page has many commonly used sheet, halyard and cable lengths.

Hello

I have a similar problem intill we cam up with a great idea and that is conecting the end the main sheet to a bungy cord and run the bungy cord through pullys so the rope will always on the boat and well we think it will work. Well if you want to try it have fun it should work and if you dont the length of rope you said you had sounds right. Well any way have fun.
