Can anyone give me a reference to align the one piece gudgeons? I have rebuilt my transoms, so I am drilling and tapping new holes blind. How far above the drain plug maybe??? About how far are they placed from the outside of the hull? Thanks in advance.

Vertical should be fairly simple. Pin the gudgeon to the lower casting and place on the transom. Since the upper part of the lower rudder casting in on top of the deck, and touching typically, that would put you very close.

Thanks Matt, I sent him some pictures on the Hobie forum. You probably saw those though...

There's no template for this, Matt?

No factory template. We use fiberglass jigs that fit the transoms. Normally you could place the cast version using the existing holes as a guide.

That's what I figured, but thought it might be helpful to have a paper template (like you have for drilling rudders) to help folks who have to rebuild transoms.

Getting back to you a little late, but thanks for all of the input. Zach, I got those pictures and they were a big help. Thanks for taking the time to do that. I got the new gudgeons installed and have been sailing now on four separate occasions in big wind with no problems. There is a little slop that I am going to have to work out with the new one-piece gudgeons, but I definitely feel better about them that the two piece. I'll definitely be taking the screws out occasionally to ensure I never have to do that again. I learned a lot through this repair. Now I am looking forward to making up for lost time.
