Rudder Kick Up System
I'm wondering if something might be wrong with my kick up system. at first the cams were rotated down without the pin on the rudder casting in them. i rotated them back and it seems that if i lock them down the kick up tension is fine but when i try to pull the rudders up using the tiller connector the casting pin pops out and the cam doesn't rotate to the up (accepting) position. anyone know how to fix this or is that how it's supposed to be. rather than pulling them up you just run them aground every time? doesn't sound right. any help?
I had a similar problem with my 81' h16. I found out that my cams were worn and cracked so I replaced them with new ones. It still wasen't working as well as it should have so I disasembled the cam lock and spring. Then I cleaned everything very well and reassembled the unit applying a little white lithium grease to all of the moving parts. Also I readjusted the kick up tension (17 to 22 pounds). Now everything works great. Happy sailing.
nope-cams are new and kick up tension is ok, but i can't pull the rudders up while on the boat without pulling the pin in the rudder casting out of the cam so that the cam doesn't rotate. is it ok to put white lithium on the contact surface betwwen the cam and the plastic knob on the tensioner spring? i though this may reduce the kickup tension.
Sorry I should have been a little more specific. I didn't put any grease on the cam/tensioner surface. Mainly I put it on the sides of the tensioner so it would slide freely in the casting. I also put some on the pin that the cam mounts on. Hope this is a more understandable.
