[#20372]

I seem to see lots of used Classic Waves and not so many Club Waves. I see plenty of Classics for sale around $2,000, but I have rarely seen a Club for less than $4,000. I understand that because of the way the tramp is attached to the Club's rear crossbar, that this configuration readily accepts addition of a traveler. Is there a good way to accomplish the same thing with the Classic? Having finally had the opportunity to spend some time on a Wave (Club config.), I can certainly see where having the traveler would enhance performance - but it would be great to be able to put a traveler on a $2,000 boat instead of a $4,000 boat. Of course, my sensitivity to the dollars may also stem from the fact that my former H-18 cost me $1600 when I bought it (and it sold for the same amount).

Perhaps add the lacing eyelet posts that are used on the Getaway and 20. Then lace the tramp across the aft and do away with the straps. That would clear the top of the crossbar for a traveler.

I just purchased a Classic Wave and discussed this problem with the Hobie dealer. He suggested attaching brackets (of some kind) at the back of the rear crossbar for for the velcro straps leaving the top of the crossbar free for the traveler.

The length of the straps would not allow you to move them to the aft of the crossbar. They would be too long.

OK, is there a way of adding a traveler to a Classic Wave?

Review the above options for moving the rear tramp lacing straps... Then add the traveler kit # 39250000 (Currently $204.90)

Thanks - I'm still trying to find a deal on a Club, but it's good to know that there are alternative methods available.

I did see one on eBay, but I'm a little concerned about some damage to the starboard hull. Matt - can you tell from the picture if this

wrinkle

(as the seller calls it) is something that could cause the hull to collapse under heavy pressure on the forestay?

Doesn't look good, Jason. Plus the cost of replacing the sail (between $%800 and 1100), Rudder about $500. And the bow is highly suspicious looking.
I had a lady email me about a boat available in Sheboygan. I had a lot of questions because it was a neighbors boat that did not have internet and she did not know much about it. Waiting for her to get back to me.
I am always on the lookout for used boats to build our fleets in Ohio and Florida.

Thanks Rick. I asked the seller about the

wrinkle,

as did another person. He seemed to be doing the old

trust me - it'll be fine.

Kind of hard to do that from 600 miles away. I guess I'll just keep looking - adding the cost of the rudder assembly, the sail and a trailer does bring the minimum cost closer to the high $2,000s. By the way, how much of an issue is old vs. new rudder assembly?

Besides, I guess there is no rush right now since most of the north Texas lakes have been closed for a while due to flooding. The local Hobie fleet ( http://hobiefleet23.com/ )had to find an alternate location because Hobie Point is under water.

Going price for selling an older club boat has been $2000 for me. I just sold two of mine to future fleet members. That is with the standard sail, in good shape, but a little on the blown out side. Boats themselves are in good shape - new tramps.., may need a little work on the rudder slop, but no big costly deal.

I agree with Rick, the crease in the starboard bow is not good. The seller has no experience to claim it is

no problem

. The bows are heavily loaded... never seen a Wave bow fail though.

The parts missing are certainly a concern as well. Again, the seller has no experience to quote pricing and what has sold on ebay in the past as fitting a Wave.

Matt, can you list the part number and rivet size for those eyelet posts? I looked ar the Getaway parts diagrams, and those lacing posts are not listed. I want to perform this mod on mine to get rid of the velcro straps, as I want a traveller. I can post results once I do this. I am sure I am not the only one w/ an SE model wanting better sail control!

Thanks!

Jim
