I've only seen that sort of splitting in lower quality veneers and in ply that's been left directly in sunlight in the storage store...... Where I get my ply from they have a 6mm sheet that's

sacrificed

to protect the ply sheets underneath, its full of fracture splits like the one you've pictured, the pack is stored under a laserlite sheet in the roof and the sunlight hits the rack around 11:00am through to late arvo baking the ply sheets to destruction. I always pull half a dozen odd sheets off before taking 'my sheets'
