I have just bought my first mosquito sail # 1720. I have done a fair amount of sailing in the past and am confident with trapeze etc. just wondering what any tips and tricks are and also what events would be good to race against other mozzies? Also, what is a trick to raising the mast with one or 2 people?

Where will you be sailing from?
There are as many ways of getting the mast up as there are boats. I lay the mast forward with the step under the main beam and attach all 3 stays loosely. I then simply walk the mast upright then pick it up and put it on the step and tighten the stays. Coming down is the reverse. I usually either get the crew to steady the foot so it doesn't kick sideways, or loosely tie it off.

I do the mast thing the similar to Trevor, side stays on, forestay loose, use the dolphin striker for leverage if needed tighten the forestay when its up. just do the reverse when taking down. I find it best as a one man operation (2 can get in the way ) the trick is to get the mast vertical (and keeping it vertical)prior to lifting to the mast step.

I do very similer, i lay the mast on the boat, put all wires on, stand on tramp and use the bridle for leverage, and like ross said get it vertical then raise onto the mast step, and attach the forestay!

Thanks for the answers everyone. Also, are there many mozzies down here on the bellarine Or do I have to go to Melbourne and rye and stuff? I will be attending sauna sail which apparently has a lot of mozzies?

There are a few down your way. they don't seem to get out much, there are a couple at Royal Geelong that race. if you don't sailing on Lakes there is about 4 at Derrinallum, a few more at Warrnambool.

Yeah I know of one at royal Geelong I think. Do many guys get to sauna sail??

yes many mossies go to sauna sail, at one stage we had 24 mossies. in the last few years average of about 10 to 15 mossies

Hi all,
there is potential for another Mossie down Geelong way. Nick B from the Gippsland Lakes is at Uni in Geelong and needs somebody to let him know where he could keep his boat down that way, then he would be a possible to sail.

Portarlington is about 20 minutes from Geelong, and has boat storage facilities. There is one mozzie (myself) but there are other cats too (hobie 16, A class)
