Mosquito Mould wanted
Hi all,
I have a builder here in Adelaide that is keen to make some Mosquito hulls.
He has given a very good price of $ 7080 for a pair of single kevlar hulls or for an extra $ 880 Double kevlar. This persons workmanship is first class and it is a great oportunity to get some new boats on the water.
The only thing missing is a mould.
Are there any out there with modern shapes that could be leased.
All transport, insurance etc.. would be taken care of.
For more info or any suggestions please contact me.

Hi Chris,
who is the builder? Wouldn't the price vary according to the moulds used. From my experience with moulds some of them need a lot of work before a hull can come out of them and some need the hull modified before it could be put together, all this would vary the price, how can they supply a price without seeing the moulds never mind building a hull.
Just out of interest,I have never understood why hulls would be built with double Kevlar, I can understand the Kevlar on the outside of the hulls to make them bullet proof <img src=

Hi all,
it would be good to see more Mossies built, but don't get carried away with needing hulls out of the same mould as Bob's, the hulls are with out doubt fast. But Bob started winning on Boyer hulls, then Denholm mould hulls made by Faye, then Trewin. My point, Bob is the fastest part of his boats, his tuning experience alone is beyhond most sailors imagination.
The Trewin hulls main difference to Denholm is the straight gunnels and deck line, which makes them look different, but in my opinion have not proved to be faster than the Denholm shape in the water.
Well that's my two Bobs worth anyway. <img src=

I agree that double kevlar is a waste of money and know real benefit.
The quoted price is based on a mould similar to the faye one.
The builder is Antony Barrett of the Fibreglass factory. They make the Alpha F14. And Antony has worked in the industry for many years working with the likes of Brett Young who has made world class 505's etc..
I don't have a problem getting the first hulls from them as I know their workmanship would be a lot better than the recent new boats I have seen.
Has anyone got contact details for Mr Bovis?
Or whoever is in possesion of the truan mould.
It is in the interest of the class to find alternatives to what currently available.
Just like sails. You don't need to pay big bucks from the likes of Goodall, Irwin or whoever to get a quality product.
Please also note that the price is direct from the Fibreglass factory and the only interest I have in this is the growth of the class.

Hi Chris,
certainly a capable builder, he would have a better idea than most having built similar size cat hulls, but he must still be assuming he would have little preperation time working on the moulds to recover the cost of.
I have no idea how to contact Phil Bovis, have not seen him since Loch Sport Nats. Best chance would be to contact Bob and ask him or maybe Mick?

I'm not sure it's in the interests of the class to slag off manufacturers who have been quite supportive of the class over the years, unless of course there is good reason to.
As far as I have seen, Goodall and Irwin have always charged a reasonable price for a good product. I have a 5 season old Goodall and a 3 season old Irwin, both of which have had hard use but are still capable of winning a titles if pointed in the right direction. I would say these sails were pretty good value.
As regards your comment about the
build quality
of the new boats. How is a comment like that in the interest of the class? If you have a particular problem with something about the new Mosquitoes, what is it? Since, until now, they were built by Boyer Fibrecraft I don't see why the quality would be any different from Jim's other work (ie. very good). My boat was built by Larry Fay from the same mould and and other than the gunwales being finished differently (who cares?) I can't see that there's any difference.
For roughly an 8 year period, only one new boat was built. Thanks to a lot of hard work by a few people, in the last 3 seasons more than a dozen new foam sandwich boats are racing. THAT is in the interest of the class.
Tim.
Lets not turn this into a slagging match.
Just stating fact about sail prices. Did not bag the sailmakers. They all make pretty good sails. Just the prices vary.
There are some owners of new boats that acknowledge that the quality is not as good as it could be.
Regards
Chris

Do you really need a mould?
Have a look at http:/
