Parts
While most of the Northern Hemisphere is deep in winter, conditions are pretty mild here in West Florida. We're still sailing, fixing and swapping boats. I just sold my Mystere 5.0XL and acquired a M5.5. A friend needed a M6.0 hull which led me on a long detective chase which finally produced gold! I found a Mystere 6.0 in a salvage yard. One hull is badly damaged, no trailer, sails trashed, mainsheet & blocks missing, but everything else is good. This train wreck is not cheap but the scarce parts make it too good to pass up.
Question: Should I try to resurrect it to sail again ($$$) or just part it out?
Parts: Is anyone in need of centerboards, rudders, castings, crossbar, furler, boom, beams, or a mast? Even the tramp has some life left in it since it was covered with leaves. If I thought I could sell enough parts to needy Mysterions to make up the purchase price I just might lay out the cash needed to buy it.
Or am I a heartless bastard, feasting on the body parts of a fine not-yet-dead sailing vessel? If I really cared I'd spend several thousand dollars to bring her back to life to bolster our fleet with another Mystere.
I must be a sailor...this is keeping me up at night.
No, not an XL. However, my buddy Zack who needs a hull bought a M5.5 with all the gear to be a 10 foot wide 5.5XL. He wants to build the 6.0 hull he has into an XL using the wide 5.5 stuff and the hull I found.
The starboard bow broke off 12 inches back but far forward of the bridle tangs. The piece is missing. The hull could be rebuilt by some glass-master. However, no sails, no blocks, no trailer...lots of money to make her live again. Zack has all that stuff AND a good starboard 6.0 hull so he thinks piecing together a 6.0XL is possible for him. However, we need to sell some of the parts to make the package affordable.
This boat has sat for 3 years so I'm going to low ball the guy who owns it and hope he jumps at the sight of cash...a bunch of $100's might work. Not too many.
