Which rudders for which boat?
Hello new forum users!
My Mystere 5.0XL came with little rudders. They stalled every time the hull started to lift! I replaced them with a bigger pair from a M6.0 and now all is well. What were these rudders from? Is this what is used on the Mystere 4.3?
If these fit on a 4.3 I'd be glad to sell these little rudders! They're like new. Does anyone need them?
Hi John,
For general interest I'll post the numbers. The small blades are 33 inches long and 8" at the widest. The big ones are 37.5" long and 10 wide. Since all Mysteres use the same castings the thickness is moot. I'd like to get $5000 for the pair but I'd take less.
The little blades were useless on the 5.0XL. Under any load at all you could see them "aspirate"...air bubbles traveled down the leading edge and flowed off about a foot underwater. As soon as the boat heats up with slight weather helm the rudders slam sideways within the air pocket, the boat stops and rounds up, and it takes several seconds for clean water to "reattach" to the blades. By now you're in irons and really pissed off. I repeated this event about 50 times. If I sailed gently like a little girl it would be OK but the Opti prams would pass me. Now with the BIG blades this boat is solid as a rock and loves big air and rough water.
Just don't rake the mast...but that's a different topic.
As a subsequent owner of Rob Daniel's M6.0 #310, I took ownership of a M6.0 with an "extra" set of rudder blades. They were shaped like the curvey blades that you exhibited here, but were larger than yours.
When you said...
I had to object because of the fact that my two sets of blades were very different in thickness. The curvey ones are thinner than the larger ones. The curvey ones fit into a set of Hobie 16 castings, (with a little modifications to the perimeter sizing), while the standard 6.0 castings and blades were thicker.
GARY
I have three sets of rudders, the little ones in my first photo, the larger set from a 6.0, and a nearly identical pair from a 5.5. All 6 blades have the same thickness for the white plastic hole insert. The insert is about 1 mm thicker than the blades for 2 of the sets. However, the 5.5 blades have a thicker gel coat that makes them impossible to get into the castings without some sanding (which I haven't done yet). Since the 6.0 blades fit, I use them.
From what I can tell from my sales brochure the Mystre "S" is an evolution of the original Mystere. They added 2 feet to the original mast to take it to 28 feet, added double trapeze etc. The boat is just shy of 18 feet and is a 7/8 scale Tornodo (sp?). I bought mine new in 1983 which dates both the boat and the skipper!!
The 5.5 line was the next interation if I am not mistaken. The two boats have litte in common other than two hulls and the rudders.
I might add that I recall a regatta at our local club in Toronto where the Mystere folks showed up with a factory boat and the designer. They smoked the entire field including several Tornados (in an identical boat we languished mid field!!). I was humbled by the skills of the skipper/designer who it turns out was some Olympic class sailor from England - wish I could remember his name.
