Fellow Board Members,

We've had several inquiries about certifying regattas as "NAMSA Certified." We never established any criteria for a NAMSA Certified Regatta. Last year, I published suggested criteria with my rationale, and only received two comments in return. The effort died on the vine. So, here it is again. The attached file contains my ideas on criteria. Let's post some constructive criticism, ratify the final criteria, and get the ball rolling!

I have attached suggested SI's for regattas that are not Hobie. And they work very well.
I have been using this format for a number of years and it combines some of Hobie and some of the Olympic-type regattas.
take a look and make comments, please.
Thanks
Rick

See the attachment for comments. I had put my input in italics, but they didn't come out like that. Oh Well! You can figure it out.
Where you said it must ISAF, I made the addition about changes in the SIs.
Thanks
Rick

Prefer Rick's post as it seems "unbiased" towards any particular brand of boat. Don't want to seem favorable to any nor exclusionary of any.

That's my $ .02 worth.

I propose that our comment deadline be 1 May 2003. If we don't receive anymore, I propose we accept Rick's comments, make the necessary changes, and press!

For my $0.02, I would strongly encourage NAMSA to require participants to carry insurance on their boat (which include racing activities).

NAMSA may also want to outline protest/redress protocols for the PRO of NAMSA sanctioned events.

And lastly, NAMSA may also require sanctioned events to adhere to established safety guidelines:
- cancellation/postponement of event(s) in cases of severe weather
- ensure that all participants release and hold harmless the PRO, event organizers, sponsors, etc.
- require all beachcat/open boat participants wear PFDs. For distance races, add equipment such as tow ropes, VHF, cell phone, and possibly EPRIB in cases of (really) long distance/offshore races.
- Require PRO to have emergency plan to deal with issues such as boat disablement, sailor injury (on and off water incident), notification of team withdrawl from racing, and what to do when the beer runs out (well, maybe not THAT one...). This should be included in both course and distance racing, but more important for the offshore stuff.

I'm sure there's other stuff, too, but I can't think of it right now...

Hi Bob,
Guess we need to reopen this thread, so here we go. We need to get some type of package available for those that want races sanctioned.

My thoughts at this moment:

I know you have heard this before, but we don't want any reference to Hobie.

Do we want to be demanding? Around the country there are so many clubs that do so many different types of racing, I sort of don't like to tell them must have this and that fleets, so many trophies (some have none at all), etc.
I like the idea of suggesting standard ways of running regattas, and that we can take right out of the US Sailing Racing Rules. Same with the Suggested SIs and Suggest NORs.
A good example is CABB. They run a race per month, but we never know what kind or race until we get there. We never have class racing and never have trophies. Yet, they should still be sanctioned events, if they want us to sanction them.
I just don't want to start sounding Nazi-like -- vee half our vaze! if you get my drift.

The SIs that Hobie uses are pretty good, but again we should only be in a suggestive position.

Rick-

A couple of years ago I was at an "open" regatta that didn't specify about insurance coverage or not. One of the sailors rammed another. Guess what??? the party at fault had no insurance and still hasn't paid for the damages they caused. Also the offending sailor hasn't missed a race since but the sailor with the damaged boat has missed several due to the their insurance carrier not wanting to pay for all of the damage.

If that happened to me I would go ballistic!

That is certainly understandable.., and you have expensive boats (I am sailing a Wave right now).
I remember in a regatta years ago I never thought about insurance much and I hit a guy. Sure enough my home owners had no problem taking care of it. I was pretty thankful for that. But, how many sailors have home owners.

Things to ponder and see what we can do.

I can remember back when there weren't nay used boats around. If you bought one you paid what a new car would cost and you probably financed it. You had to have insurance to get the loan to buy it. Now you can get a used boat on a credit card and not insure anything. Too many people are getting away with this irresponsible behavior.

The post above is seriously outdated. Look on page 2, 29 January. I included all the changes above. Now we need to tweak those!!!!
