NAMSA Discussion list (for conference)
Dividing into Regions:
- discuss nominating regional leaders (chairpersons? - what do we call them?)
- discuss regional structure.
- Do we sub-divide regions into SA's much like US Sailings' infrastructure
- decide if we should start a points series this year - and how it should be structured (Nationals at Tradewinds in Jan 2005?).
- what fleets should that series include - youth too?
Newsletter in Catsailor:
- do we agree that it should be so? (at this point it looks like a resounding yes).
- $20 membership to include magazine (NAMSA gets $5)?
- Who's doing the newsletter to go in each issue?
Please add to this at will. I will collect them, put them together in a word document, and email to everyone so we can have it in front of us for the phone conference.
Pertaining to our upcomming phone conference, can we make some sort of agreement as to our goals for this year? I would like to propose the following (and largely welcome any commentary).
- Newsletter (Catsailor discussion / agreement) (end of Feb)
- Regional representation (end of April)
- Points series toward Nationals (June)
- Insurance available for paper fleets (end of Feb)
Bob's post from the other thread (including attachment). I will put all this together in a word document and distribute a couple of days prior to our phone meeting.
NOTE: A lot has transpired since I wrote this. So, add the appropriate stuff to Jake's list.
I. NAMSA Regatta Certification Criteria:
1. Attached is the revised NAMSA Regatta Certification criteria. I eliminated the NAHCA SIs and replaced them with Rick's SIs. All I need is the NAMSA/US Sailing Multihull courses.
2. Waterbug submitted the following suggestions for discussion:
a. NAMSA should require participants to carry insurance on their boat (which include racing activities).
b. NAMSA may want to outline protest/redress protocols for the PRO of NAMSA sanctioned events.
c. NAMSA may also require sanctioned events to adhere to established safety guidelines:
(1) Cancellation/postponement of event(s) in cases of severe weather.
(2) Ensure that all participants release and hold harmless the PRO, event organizers, sponsors, etc.
(3) Require all beachcat/open boat participants to wear PFDs. For distance races, add equipment such as tow ropes, VHF, cell phone, and possibly EPIRB in cases of (really) long distance/offshore races.
(4) Require PRO to have emergency plan to deal with issues such as boat disablement, sailor injury (on and off water incident), and notification of team withdrawal from racing. This should be included in both course and distance racing, but more important for the offshore stuff.
3. I like the idea of having Division Points which qualify teams for the Nationals.
II. Administration:
1. I volunteer to administer the program.
2. Requests for Certification could be e-mailed to me. I would check if the event organizer is a member of NAMSA. If they are, I would mail/e-mail a package which would include the certification criteria, "NAMSA Certified" logo, SIs, courses, and information on insurance. When the event has concluded, the organizer could mail/e-mail the results back to me. I would update the database and forward it to Rick for inclusion on the web site (or, if allowed, I could update the web site directly myself).
III. Action Items (Deadline: 15 Feb 04 ?):
1. Send me the a copy of the NAMSA/US Sailing Multihull Courses.
2. Settle which of Waterbug's criteria we should include in the Certification package.
3. Decide on whether or not to have a Division Points system qualifying teams for the Nationals.
4. Approve/disapprove my proposal to administer the program as outlined above.
