3. Entry will be accepted by completing a registration form and payment of fee. Pre-registering on the internet is desired or may be by posted mail to Warren Green, 18 Spinnaker Point Court, Indian Harbour Beach, FL 32937 by April 1, 2008, or at the registration period as stated below. If not registering early, an email to wgreen3262@bellsouth.net indicating firm intention, with name, boat and sail number will be greatly appreciated. A registration form is included herein or one may be requested by mail. The entry fee is $50.00. Those who enter early by the internet will be allowed a $10 discount. Fees will be paid during the Keys registration period or by mail. Pre-registration will permit better development of social activity. The entry fee will be used to pay for any required insurance, awards, administrative and race management support costs, and social activities. Checks should be made to Warren Green, HB100.
4. There will be no safety boat provided. Each crew must be prepared to fend for them selves. Rules 3 and 4 of current RRS are firmly emphasized and must be seriously considered by all competitors. Racers will be out of contact with others for long periods and must be able to right your own boat and safely perform emergency recovery of self and crew if separated, injured or if your boat is damaged or even sunk.
5. Awards: Hogs Breath baseball type caps designating name of race, principal sponsor and finish position, for skipper and crew for three places, as designated by the RC, if the fleet is large enough a class or classes of pre-registered boats may be used, (A class must be at least 5 pre-registered boats of the same class and equipment; (Then a low point system will be used for that class (es))). One plaque will be awarded to each skipper in the top 3 positions, and 3 more if a class(es) is(are) used. The corrected low time winner overall will be recognized on the perpetual plaque in the Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West.
6. Scoring: Timed racing using Portsmouth handicapping by boat type and equipment or as stated above.
7. Measurements: Measurements and weights may be made on shore at the Islander Resort at RC request.
8. Insurance: Your liability insurance policy or letter of commitment by provider must be shown at the designated Keys registration location.
9. Required equipment and skill: All equipment to safely sail the boat on the ocean, including individual CG approved life preserver (PFD) for each crew member, plus, at least one operational water proof handheld VHF radio, one throw-able PFD, a basic medical kit, one tow line, night light, whistle and a water protected cell phone. It is highly suggested that an operational an up to date personal EPIRB be on each person. Due to the length of the race, each crew member will be asked to carry and show at inspection, at least adequate water or appropriate beverage supply for the duration of the race.
10. Final registration with social activity is planned at 5:00 – 9:00 PM, Friday April 25th, 2008, at a designated location, to be provided by further notice, in the Keys. (Directions will be provided in a Cat Sailor forum or by email to internet registrants or those sending firm interest internet notifications).
11. Schedule of events
a. Skippers meeting 9:00 AM, Saturday April 26th, 2008 at the Islander Resort, beach side, near the water sports office. Start time may be changed during the skippers meeting.
b. Racing Format and Course: The planned warning signal will be at 09:55AM each day used, based upon conditions and format described below. A firm time setup at skippers meeting.
i. Primary and preferred format: A nonstop 100 kilometer race from The Islander
resort to Smather’s Beach, Key West Florida, in one day. This format is dependent on winds and will not be started for forcast winds at 3 mph or less, but will be run at winds over 10 mph. All races will use a water start off the pier at the Islander Resort.
ii. Secondary format, with light winds, of 4-9 mph (1) A two leg race stopping at Sombrero Beach, Marathon Fl, and (2) then continuing to Smather’s Beach on the second day. We strongly suggest hotel arrangements should be made at sponsoring hotels and retained, for either format. Distances will permit these arrangement with supporting ground crew vehicles. Boats without ground crew should inform the RC.
iii. Third and last choice format: Running the primary and preferred format on Sunday April 27th. If there is no wind greater than 3 measured mph either day the race will be abandoned. If abandoned, triangle racing will be considered.
iv. A final decision will be made at the Skippers meeting Saturday morning using existing and forecasted buoy winds.
c. Sailing Instructions will be handed out to registrants at registration on April 25th and posted at the Islander Water Sports area by 0800 on 26 April.
d. In either case above, Awards will be presented at The Hogsbreath Saloon, at a food and beer party provided by the Saloon in Key West on Saturday Evening (April 26th), time TBD.
(This of course will be changed to Sunday in the event of format change.)
Hotel rates for the Islander Resort for a room with two double beds and kitchenette are at an excellent rate of $159. The Hotel in Key West is the “Double Tree Grand Key Resort”, at the same rate ($159), for a room with two double beds. Maps for the Key West location will be available at the Skipper’s meeting. Pre-reservations should be made by telling the reservation clerk that you are with the Hogs Breath Race. Phone numbers for reservations are as follow s :The Islander Resort: 305-664-2031. The Doubletree Grand Key Resort 305-293-1818. Early Reservations necessary to hold rooms and rates.
(The primary preferred format is selected due to recommendations of some sailors wishing to have a family day in Key West on Sunday. Sailors will be instructed how to set up for overnight storage of boats and trailers in Key West). Sailors may choose to sail in the vicinity of Key West on Sunday at their own schedule; or if there is enough interest, a triangle race will be considered.
12. Boats and trailers may be placed in the trailer parking area of the Islander Resort after the Miami Key Largo race. Up to thirty boats may be assigned storage locations in the water sports area for storage on cat wheels; contact Dennis Green at dndkeys3@bellsouth.net or phone 305 522 4944, for location. All trailers must be placed in the trailer parking lot. Neither The Islander Resort nor the Islander Watersports, will be responsible for loss or damages to boats or trailers stored on site. In Key West, a marina on Stock Island has agreed to store boats over night with security, provided by the Hogs Breath Saloon. Storage is at boat owner’s risk. They request that no valuables or pilfer-able equipment be left on boats. Maps and instructions will be provided.
13. This is a tune up race for the TYBEE 500, so all equipment should be in a safe order of readiness and tested for endurance events. TYBEE 500 competitors may leave their boats at the Islander Resort, in the water sports area until needed for that race. This is a parking lot storage area for trailers. Up to twenty boats may be left by the water sports area on cat wheels if desired, and used for practice as needed. Neither The Islander Resort nor Islander Resort Watersports will be responsible for loss or damages to boats stored on site. The TYBEE 500 is currently scheduled to begin on May 11, 2008 from Barnes sound, FL. Boats so stored, may be trailered or sailed to Gilberts, by Jewfish Creek, in preparation for that race. An organized race from the Islander Resort to Gilberts sponsored by Marley’s Restaurant and Marina is being considered on the weekend of April 3-4 if interest is shown by competitors.
