I’ve got a new to me 1989 P 19, I think it’s an MX. I’ve owned a couple of P18’s over the years, but this is a different animal to me. I’ve got many questions, but I would hate to create noise in the forums with my multiple beginner questions. Any experienced 19 owners willing to exchange text/emails with me concerning my stupid questions? This boat was set up for racing, which I know nothing about.

What do you mean by 'creating noise'?!?

This forum is ALL ABOUT CATAMARAN SAILING NOISE! Don't be intimidated by believing that your questions are 'stupid.'  They're not stupid.

By getting your questions answered here, you will likely be helping other new P19 sailors as well.

So don't be so damned private with your questions! 🤣

You're amongst friends!

Congrats on your new  P19 cat! It's a wonderful cat!

From the pic, looks awesome.  You dont see too many P19mx with the mx jib.  Assuming the previous owner also did the rudder upgrades, this looks pretty nice.

I really liked my P19.  I put a spin on mine.  After i sold it, i went and got an 18-2.  Both those boats love the weight on the back of the boat.  I also got rid of the 4 way (ie knee shreader) jib system as it was easier on the crew.

Congrats on the purchase!

Did you put on a self-tacking jib traveler track like on  the F16's and F18's?

My Mystere 6.0 that I'm repairing has the ol' Tornado-style barber-hauler/slider/wire traveler jib system and I was thinking it would be a lot easier for my crew with a self-tacking jib with a radiused track similar to my F18. Especially when adding a spin for more excitement.

I think to do a self tacker, you would have to change so much (ie recut the jib so much) that it would be more of a detriment to the boat.  I would not do it.  I would keep the regular jib.  I would delete that 4 way jib system though.

On the spin, the one issue you will run into will be that 19mx jib.  As it the foot is so low, its hard to figure out the attachment  for the spin pole.  If you go the spin route, id go with the regular jib, so you can bring the pole up.  An f18 spin would be pretty close to perfect.

Good luck on your choices... Got me all excited for you!

@jonathan

Yeah, I've high-jacked @33curt33's thread for the moment with my Mystere 6.0 mod questions.

I will likely have to pop off the decks anyway, and was thinking of moving the bridle chainplates, or add extra chainplates, a bit further forward so that the original jib could work with a traveler track.   If using a spin, the jib really doesn't need to be as BIG as it is. Modifying the leech is no big thing. The bridle apex is plenty high enough for hanging a spin pole.

I've yet to sail it, so I'd like to get it to a point where I can get a better feel for her sailing for a first season, then do all the heavy mods in the winter.

Gotta get the F18 in the water, too.

Helping is what we are all about. The Prindle 19 is a beast, congratulations. Please post your questions. It helps if you start a topic of each "category" of help needed (ie. rigging, repair, parts needed etc.) to keep things clear and on-topic.

Couple of questions to help us help you.

Have you sailed the Prindle 19 at all?

Where do you sail? We might have members close to you.

I haven’t had a chance to get out yet. Working through a few rigging issues, then hopefully  finding the time next week. I’m in Fairhope, AL. The original owner ( not the guy I purchased from ) lives right across the bay in Mobile. I messaged him via Facebook a couple of weeks ago with no response, so the best option I had for help is a dead end. I’ve figured most things out, just have questions about the center board system and non-existent downhaul. I am thankful for the advice from folks on this message board.

Feel free to ping me on questions - I've had a 19 from '89 - '08... and a modified 18-2 from '13 to present. On the 19, I added a MX main and a bow foil with furling jib.

My son is getting married the weekend of that race, so I can’t make it. Hope to bump into some of you folks at the next event around here.

Scratch that.  Pretty sure the Dragonslayer (formerly owned by a Mobile area friend) was a P18MX.  That sure looks like its sail, though, and has the same number as I recall.

You should hit up Duly Chaltain on Facebook. He is the previous owner and would be able to help.

I talked to Duly last weekend at Slip To Ship, and he said the old Dragonslayer was back in his possession.

33curt33:  Duly lives in the Mobile area...definitely the man to get help from, and I do think he'd be willing to do so.  If you can't get him on FB, send me a PM.  I can probably get y'all in touch with each other.

@33curt33 I should also have mentioned that Duly (and several other knowledgeable multihull sailors) are involved with the Buccaneer YC across the bay from you.
