Over the last two weekends the Sail Melbourne Cat Classic and the Torquay Australia day regattas have been held. In both cases the F16s have been represented by the Mosquitos (there were Taipans present at Sail Melbourne but they did not use spinnakers).

Four F16 Mosquitos (3 cat and 1 sloop) were in the fast-cat division of the Sail Melbourne event along with 12 A-classes and two Capricorn F18s. Unfortunately Peter Nikitin injured himself early on and wasn't able to compete, but the other 3 had an interesting day's racing in very variable winds.

Around the course the Mozzies finished in the midst of the A-classes in every race while the F18s improved their results as the wind increased throughout the day. On handicap Gary Maskiell showed that he is right on form at the moment by winning overall. The Sail Melbourne web site has the handicap results. Line honours results can be seen on the Victorian Mosquito Catamaran Association web site at http://home.vicnet.net.au/~mosquito/sp_sm.htm

The final results for the Torquay Australia Day Regatta are not out yet but I have heard that there was a large fleet of Hobie Tigers present including Darren Bundock, two Capricorn F18s and Gary Maskiell and Peter Cobden in their F16 Mosquitos. I have also heard that the Capricorns and F16s have both been giving the Tigers a hard time. I can't wait to see the results, and I'll get an account from Gary as soon as I can.

The other news is that we will be holding an inaugural F16 Victoria State Challenge over Easter at Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club from 10th to 12th April. Some F16 Mosquitos will be there of course and it would certainly be great to see some of the Victorian Taipans get their spinnakers out for the event.

Hi Tim,
Hate to cause problems, but has it escaped the orginisers attention that the Victorian Taipan State Titles are being held on the same weekend on lake Bolac. I hope I'm wrong, but this would be a really silly idea to be pulling half a fleet away for another regatta somewhere else.

Regards
Antony

Hi Antony

I agree that would be a problem. Do you know who the contact is for the Victorian Taipan Association (I'm not having any success with the Taipan web site right now)?

dates

Tim :
"inaugural F16 Victoria State Challenge over Easter at Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club from 10th to 12th April."

Dan O'Connell :
"It appears that the SA state titles will either be on the 14th and 15th of Feb or 20th to 21st of March,
the latter being more likely."

The latter is still tentative as of yet. But is looks like there is no conflict and it appears there won't be as well.

Maybe we need to formalize the contacts with the Taipan association more so we can prevent scares like this one by coordinating the planned schedules at the beginning of the season ?

Mozzies ending up in the middle of the A-cat fleet on elapsed time. Cool !

My hat of to the mozzie sailors both the South African and Australian have the most inspiring attitude. I wish for the F16 class to take after you. No talk, just sail and so well while having great fun.

Regards,

Wouter
