Shocking!
the horror, the horror
I thought it was Apocalypse Now, but Google tells me that it was inherited from Heart of Darkness, the book on which the film was based. Learn something everyday...

Where did
the horror, the horror
and
oh the humanity
come from?
These were the words broadcast over radio and later spliced with the newsreel film footage, by the reporter who was witnessing the arrival of the Hindenburg - the German dirigible - at Lakehurst New Jersey in the late 30.s, when it suddenly burst into flames and come crashing to the ground.
I certainly believe the Tikster's right on this one. It's from Joseph Conrad's book Heart Of Darkness which Apocalypse Now was based on. The character Kurtz said the words I believe. I still think Victory was one of Conrad's better books though. Heart of Darkness was written around 1898 or so. A good sailing story he wrote is Youth. Typhoon is also good if you like old sea stories............
Tom

I read Victory a long time ago and remember that it is good. Heart of Darkness was also very good. Another great quotation from heart of darkness
Your strength is an accident arising from the weakness of others.
It can be changed to show any relative issue- intelligence, beauty, speed, etc
Wait a minute, how can Heart of Darkness be the book for which Appocolypse Now is based, if the movie is about the Viet Nam war? Was there another war with hellicopters, surfing, weed, Hendrix, and Marlin Brando in the 1890's?? Or was it based on wiping out the Indians? I mean, they at least smoked the payote. <img src=

It was a
modern
adaptation of Heart of Darkness. It holds pretty well to the book for the most part. about a guy going
native
and a little insane (but is he?) and the journey to go find him and what that guy learns/figures out/discovers on the way about himself.
I wrote a paper in college on the existential aspects of the book (yes, liberal arts, great college)
Vietnam was just the setting. The thing is based on Heart of Darkness. That is where that Dude Kurtz came from. It even says this in the credits for the movie..........
But I don't believe this (from Kurtz) was in the book
They won't let pilots put the word F#%k on their airplanes; yet they will let them drop Naplam on human beings.

english was Conrad's second (third? fourth?) language and he was very good with it but, no, I don't think he would have put that in the book <img src=

Not exactly. The real theme is man's inhumanity to man.
HOD is about the destructive impact of European colonialism on native African cultures. Lots of environmental degradation, death, dead bodies decomposing. And, the debilation of European culture when taken out of its natural environment i.e. Europe. Kurtz loses his humanity, machines stop working.
Apocalypse Now follows those same themes. Think of the madness in the scene along the DMZ where no one is in change. It is an anti-war movie, specifically an anti-Viet Nam War movie.

I would say that that is a part of the book but I think it is more about the internal/introspective perspective and realizing how crazy we can be...
he came to a door and looked inside...
kind of thing.
Supposedly orson wells was going to try to make HOD into a movie but didn't figure he could get it right so he did Citizen Kane instead.
Yeah, but it looks like the only thing
they
will let YOU write on the side of your aeroplane is DELTA!
A Spear ?
another good one.
Plus surfing behind the Patrol Boat was awesome. And the surfer dude with the arrow through his head. But the best was that skinny little dancing blonde girl in the blue(with the two pistols!!)........I just can't remember the song they were playing ......

Best line from a movie
for me.
Comes from The Big Lebowski.
There is a scene where the main character, an old peace loving hippy, is arrested by a typical fascist cop. The main character has the greatest come-back.
The cop reprimants the main character for walking on
his
streets and being out of character in
his
nice and clean rich Malibu neighbourhood. The cop end his long monologue by yelling his summary as follows.
You are a jerk-off !
and I don't like your jerk-off face
your jerk-off cloths
your jerk-off attitute
your jerk-off friends
your jerk-off convictions
and I don't like you ! ... jerk-off !
A long pause follows where the main character just looks up at the cop with glassed over eyes. He then he snaps out of it and says with a calm voice.
Sorry, I wasn't listening there for a moment.

What is this ? Do we have a copy-cat in the (cat)house ?
2 years ago they decided to
move one closer
to the F16's by adopting the name Nacra F17.
F16 vs F17, you have to look closely to spot the difference.
Then in following the frappr.com F16 world presence map they made a geographical map showing where the F17's are as well.
Then we find this bit of new info on wikipedia :
http:/
Seems a FORMULA 17 class is underway; or at least somebody hopes that it is.
Then at Juana's they were succesful in covering all of the bases by having the VWM Blade F16's renamed to Nacra F16's.
But that is not all !
what did I discover last night ?
http:/
They are now calling themselves
Nacra F17 High Performance
!
Is it just me or is the distinction between the F16's and the Inters increasingly reduced to a single character (7 instead of 6).
We must be doing something as there is no greater compliment then to see your competition copying whatever you do.
Alter Cup on the F17's in 2009 guys ? Maybe a Global F17 challenge in the works as well ? Or perhaps an official request to US PN committee to lower the peachy F17 rating ?
I see the first yellow hulled boat has also arrived in the F17 fleet; I guess it won't be long till some sailor changes his name to Wouter ?
Wouter

THE DUDE
in the middle of an Apocalypse Now discussion is ...............well, it's just WRONG!
Tom
Future F17 sailor
Give it a rest. The 16 class has enough blow hards. If you are so fired up on the F17, go hang out on that board. There you can give Curry all the pats on the back he longs for.
I just followed my boy Wouter over here. He and my son gotta be the only two people that like that movie with THE DUDE as the main character. The last movie my son recommended was
Knocked Up.
Now that was a good one!
Reckon I'll see some of you Fellers over at HWJuana's next year
