[#24224]

Welcome to the New Year everyone I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday with friends and family.

This note is just a short reminder that fleet dues are by calendar year and are due now. Please take a few minutes to renew your membership. We have an online facility to make it as convenient as possible: http://www.naf18.com/shop

We also need to update the fleet regatta schedules. Please get your regatta dates to your area reps so they can update the schedule. http://naf18.com/wordpress/?page_id=2

Also if you are planning on participating in the 09 North American Championship your boat is required to have a measurement certificate. Please contact one of the class measures and get this process started. http://naf18.com/wordpress/?page_id=2 the list of class measures is at the bottom of the page so scroll down a bit.

Regards,

David Ingram

NAF18 Chairman

Hi Dave,

Do you know when and where the 09 nationals are going to be held?

Might try and fit a trans atlantic trip in again..

September 8-12, Long Beach, CA.

John is working on an NOR and should have the info available in a few weeks. Either John or I will post the information on the NAF18 site http://www.NAF18.com and here. The information will also be emailed to the North American teams, if you or anyone else would like to be included on those emails just PM here and I'll add you to the list.

It would be great to have you join us again Andrew... it's Andrew, right?

Dave

Andrew has redemption on his mind - JC beat him last year.

The Championship will be sailed Tuesday the 8th through Saturday the 12th, leaving Sunday as a travel day. Measurement will be held for four days prior to the event. Saturday and Sunday (the 5th and 6th) is the ABYC Labor Day Regatta - awesome warm-up event for like $30, run by the Championship host club on the same patch of water we're using for the week. Show up early, avoid the crush at measurement and set up, enjoy the club's amenities.

Both Nacra (about 30 minutes from race site) and Hobie (about an hour from race site) have said charters may be available. CONTACT YOUR DEALER! 🙂

Question.
I have never raced a F-18 event, as there are none in the nor cal area. We race the Hobie Division 3 series on a 2007 Tiger. What are the requirements to race in the north americans? Any special gear I need ?
I may talk the wife into a week in Long Beach.

The trail-blazing Tiger is fully F18 compliant. You'll need a measurement session but if your stuff is all stock, it will be perfunctory in nature. There are several F18 events just north of you where they've had the most growth in the whole country.

Biggest difference in F18 and OD Tiger is the weight - as long as you are over 309-lbs crew weight, then you're fine with the stock Tiger. Rules are at http://naf18.com/PDF/F18_2007_Class_Rules.pdf

Cheers, Rich - let me know if I can help.

Well I'm 12 hours to Seattle Or 12 hours to Los Angeles so those are hard to get to. My question was more do I have to race before the Nationals to qualify to race at nationals? Also Does my crew need to be a F-18 member or USSA ?
And come on John you saw me at Dana Point The only way we weigh in light is if my crew is under 40 lbs.

Rich,

You don't not have to qualify for the North American Championship, write the check, get your boat certified, have insurance and be class members and you're set.

Both the skipper and crew need to be class members.

Just read through the rules , Does a Boom mounted gps count as a compass or do I need to add one?

I can't get to the NAF18 site from work... but I can access this forum... go figure, anyway I'm pretty sure the compass is optional.

I expect to be asking the Class to allow us to waive the compass and tow line safety requirements. Pretty sure they were waived for the previous events... or I have to RAF. <img src="<>/crazy.gif" alt="crazy" title="crazy" height="15" width="15" />

Rich, I don't think I met your wife at Dana Point... and it is never polite or safe to assume a woman's weight, so I didn't. <img src="<>/whistle.gif" alt="whistle" title="whistle" height="15" width="15" />

Yea but I push 260 so we're good. Hopefully when my knee gets better I can drop a few more pounds. Is there a F-18 Family membership?

Santa Barbara will have at least one big F18 regatta. Last year there were two regattas. It is 2 hours closer with no traffic. It is 3 hours closer when there is traffic in LA.

Yea but if I can do 2 regattas 5 hours away instead of 1 thats 12 hours I got to sail when and where I can.
But I'm going to try more this Year. But my 2 big trips will be Havamega and the F-18 Na's.
Hopefully I can sleep at a friends house and save the hotel fees to make it cheaper.

Hey Rich!

how did you go finding a 70lb crew?

its really hard to find little people that can deal with the kite.

No my wife is 100 lbs. And she loves the kite now, I had to get her the SNU to make it easier to launch and recover but now she can fly it all day.

Rich I believe a GPS is still against the rules of sailing F18s. It used to be okay then it got disallowed. I do not think it is back to

okay

yet.

There are some boats that carry a GPS but not for use while sailing. They are for after the races replay.

Later,
Dan
