what is the modern consensus with batten tension in very light air (with modern sail plans?

add a bit more tension and induce shape, or not ??

I think the importance of batten tension changed a bit when sails starting being made of mylar based fabrics. It's not as important.

I generally tighten mine as tight as I can get them and leave them that way. I'll change over the top two or three to a stiffer batten as the wind gets up. If I have a sail that tacks badly (getting the battens to pop over), I'll loosen them some to just avoid that frustration...but it hasn't been an issue with my latest F18 or A-cat sails.
