I want tostart racing again. But I don't really want to go driving all over the State of Florida for my thrills. So the idea is to try to join the local PHRF monoslow fleet and request a courtesy start and finish and a boat for boat result.
Has anyone else tried this?
Is there an unoffical PHRF handicap number for an H16?
The hot boat of the fleet is my barber's Melges 24. Will I be able to pace him?
I don't have the PHRF numbers but according to my Portsmouth listing the Melges will probably be giving you time.

We race a couple of times a year with mixed fleets. The problem with it is the outcome of the event is not skill determined it depends upon the conditions. A cat relys on boat speed, ie few up wind tacks.. In lighter switchy wind or on small lakes, the monohulls run much closer to threir numbers than you can on a cat.
The up side is that certain boats like the Melges in the right conditions will give a good race iireguardless of the numbers.

True. I think mine are the 2000 numbers. I didn't do a new run before responding. Though, they didn't change much. The Melges still has to give time to the Hobie.
Any time we (cats) go against boats like the Melges the figures aren't going to mean a whole lot until after the corrected times are posted. That's what keeps Portsmouth and PHRF racing interesting!
Also, the type of racing will make a big difference -- around the buoys will, I think, usually give the advantage to the monohull. On longer legged races, especially if you can get a good reach in, the cats can more than hold their own. And then in light air -- well, you know how that goes.

I have suggested the same thing to the local fleet here in Melbourne FL.......they race everyother weekend and I thought it would be fun just to go out and race with them (for fun) I do their races on monos sometimes but I would really like to get my Getaway out there too.

Windjammers of Clearwater's Fall Bay series is starting up this Sunday, 9/9. We use Portsmouth ratings and welcome any and all cats and others under 23 feet (mainly due to the shallowness of the water). Normally we have several Flying Scots, Lasers, Prindles, Hobies, etc. Barb and Chip Short are often out on either their I20 or TheMightyHobie18. We would love to have more boats out on our Sunday series. Cats are DEFINATELY WELCOME! The racing is free and launch fee is $4.00 ($2.00) if you're a Clearwater resident (free if you are a Windjammer member).
Site is at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center on Sand Key. Take Hwy 60/Gulf-to-Bay to Clearwater Beach, head south and across the bridge over Clearwater Pass, turn left at the first drive. We have two ramps and an adequate area to rig your boat.
The series will run generally every two weeks throughout the fall. Skipper's meeting at Noon and first race at 1PM.
