I put on a race around the island I live, on like that, a few years ago. One way was great for spin boats and the other was good for non-spin.

We used to have a very active catamaran fleet here. But we lost access for whatever reason. At any rate, the Sanibel Causeway is open to sailors again so I thought I'd throw this out to anyone interested.

Again, this event is unsupported and very casual.

Is that bridge at the start/finish point high enough to get under or do you start on one side and take out on the other when you finish?

It's plenty high! It replaced a drawbridge and is part of the hurricane evacuation plan. It must be 60' or so.

You coming?

How much water is on the inside of the islands? Is there enough to avoid snapping off daggerboards?

Isn't that the real expensive causeway? Which side of the toll plaza is the start line?

Sometime in May

...?

I've got a son graduating High School in May and two daughters graduating up at Auburn in May so I'm going to be busy. I doubt I'll have any 'extra' weekends off for sailing.

Oh, and don't forget about trying to de-conflict with the the Mug race in May.

. I don't see much of a conflict. This is not intended to be a big event. But June would work as well.

When/where was the KPRR date posted? I wouldn't want to miss that one.

Is the northern pass Boca Grande? Tarpon season has started. Playing dodge boats with 100 tarpon fishing boats might be at best interesting.

Your direction to take would depend greatly on the tide at that pass.

Except for the Intercoastal, the area around Cabbage Key & Useppa is pretty thin.

I'll ask the skipper, it might be a Stiletto trip. Or if friends have the fish shacks, the back porch would be a great view of the race.

There are three passes that could be used: Sanibel, Captiva, Boca Grande. Additionally, a course south to Lover's Key and back could be set. I figured to wait, see if there is any interest and set the final course by acclaim, the day of.

Water depth isn't a concern for beach cats, except that there are lots of oyster bars. I don't know about the Stiletto.

Oh yeh.

No see um's

should be in bloom so I was thinking the finish time limit should be 1 hour before sunset.

I have been becalmed it Pine Island Sound at night, in summer. You don't wanna do that.
