Some advice on an older glass & wood Tornado, Thanks in advc
Hi, maybe I can ask for some advice
Looking to replace a F-18 I sold last year, and I've come across an older Glass Wood Tornado.
Boat look's 15-20yrs young, but seems in good shape from pictures.
Not sure of the year of the boat, and glass wood construction.
But I've sailed a Tornado before, they are a great boat. This one is approx 3.5K.
I'm kind of on a fence, and would appreciate it if I could have
your thoughts. Price seems right, but Wood Glass I'm not sure.
Any Idea's are welcome.
Thanks
Steve
Hi Steve,
If it is mid-70's or younger, it is likely an all glass SailCraft of Canada boat. There were wooden boats built of that age, but most were clear varnished, not painted like your picture.
If all glass, check the decks for soft spots...small area easy to fix...if extensive might not be worth more than $1k as you'll need to do a lot of work.
If it is wood construction and if it is not rotting/still light & stiff, it could be a wonderful performer.
My Dad co-ran Sailcraft in Montreal until mid-1970's and I grew up on these boats. If you have questions send them my way.
Do you mean it's a wooden Herbert Glas Tornado?
Fantastic boat if it is as Herbert built them light and very, very strong. It would date from late 70's to late 80's - obviously the later the better.
If it has been looked after and you're not looking to race it rigged as the latest T's it could be a cheap and thoroughly enjoyable toy!
