Here on Galveston Bay, or Galveston Island (just southeast of Houston), we sail pretty much all year, at least I do, went last weekend.

It's a shame holidays and what not get in the way!

Thanks Kevin,

TheBeachcats.com is still new but I think it's developing into a solid resource. We now have over 750 pictures in the photo gallery.

What I do in winter is try to catch up on inside stuff that I put off all summer when I'm busy doing outside stuff. I put in a new vanity in the bathroom and now am looking to put in new kitchen countertops. Not too exciting I know but it still has to be done I sure don't miss mowing the grass and swating mosquitoes.

Winter Time:

1. Hockey, Brats & Beer...
2. Hit Vegas for a week
3. Work on my boats
4. Work on other people's boats
5. March Madness!!!
6. Fleet stuff
7. Stay in shape
8. Prepare for the College World Series
9. Fix the house
10. Visit the Cantina now and then

I am glad I can't sail all year around. I would be burned out. Sailing is a great past time, but I would not value it as much if it was easy to hit the beach every weekend.

I'm with you. The most enthusiastic cat sailors seem to live in the areas that have the shortest sailing seasons. When we were sailing up in the Ohio, Michigan area and the season was only about 12 weeks long, everybody tried to get to every regatta, regardless of weather, because we had a time limit. But in Florida, because we are able to sail year round, it's too easy to say, "Hey, it's too much wind, it's too little wind, it's too cold, it's too hot -- catch ya next time."

It IS still winter up North, isn't it? Mike Fahle just sent this to me to put a nautical spin on the cold weather theme. I had also used this in the magazine sometime in the last year.

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannon fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck?

The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of thirty cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.

There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling out from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with sixteen round indentations. But, if this plate was made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys."

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!"

Mary,

Great bit of trivia. Made me start wondering what happens when it gets "colder than a witches ### in a brass bra"?

In winter, my routine actually feels calmer and more fun. I usually wake up around 6:00 AM every day. I study in Brooklyn Technical High School, and right now I’m part of a STEM focused program where we learn technology, problem solving, and digital skills. Winter mornings are cold, but I honestly enjoy that quiet feeling before the day starts.

I really love winter because of the snowfall. Wearing winter wear, cozy sweaters, boots, and then coming home to sit under a warm blanket is the best feeling. Making a snowman ☃️ is something I never get tired of, even now.

When there’s a snow day and school gets closed, that’s the highlight. On those days, me and my friends Emily, Sarah and Jake usually go outside, build snowmen, take photos, and just enjoy the day. We even do silly snow day superstitions for fun like putting ice cubes in the toilet, drawing a snowman on paper and hanging it at home, or placing a spoon under the pillow and making a wish for school to close. Funny thing is, sometimes it actually works.

Winter days feel even better because my mom and dad are home more. My mom loves trying new winter recipes, and the whole house feels warm and lively. Overall, winter just brings comfort, fun memories, and a slower pace that I really enjoy.

@sailgood I'm not following any of that? Did you mean to post in a 24 year old topic?
