WTB Hobie 16 ready to sail this summer and eventually race

If you want to race it, you don't want the one with bottom paint on it. What does a Hobie 16 mast cost? The second boat is probably in much better shape, but it's going to cost more, plus the mast.

You can then take your time finding a beater with a trailer for less than a grand.

Take the mast and trailer and part out the rest.

can you easily remove the bottom paint? and the 2nd is also missing all of the stays and doesn't have harnesses. also the mast is $600 and requires all the various cleats. There also aren't any soft spots on the 1986 H16 either

That 2008 is very interesting, it would be well worth buying it and putting it back together. That is assuming that the mast is all that its missing.

Well it's looking like the 2008 is the most desirable choice although it's missing the stays, beach and car trailer, and mast. Any ideas on what that might cost?

The parted out boat was taken off Craigslist so that's out of the picture. Does anyone know of a place where comptip masts are sold complete near or on Long Island? Also getting a trailer will be another problem. There are plenty of boats for sale for under 1g but I don't want to own 2 boats at the same time.

If you get a beater for under $1K you will have what you need to go sailing for way less than a complete 2008 will cost.

You shouldn't need a Comp-Tip until you start racing regularly. You can put one on yourself, they are about $500 at a Hobie dealer.

If you are lucky, you can find a beater with a trailer AND beach wheels!

You will want to replace the rigging pretty soon, but you probably should do that on any boat you buy.

So are you suggesting I get a beater and the 2008? Or just get the beater because if I did that I'd just buy boat #1 most likely because all the boats I see listed around me are from the 1980's anyway. Sorry I'm a bit confused on your post please elaborate.

But get the 2008 before someone else grabs it. If I were closer it would be me. You might even be able to negotiate a better price. Try it.

Then search for a beater with a decent trailer...and a mast of course. Take what you need and sell off the rest in pieces. EBAY is your friend here.

Take what is left to the dump unless you are a hoarder.

would this work for a mast and then buy the comptip?
And what if I just kept boat #1 & boat #2? Just switching out the masts(can a comptip be put on the older one?) and from trailer to dolly(probably home made) when stored at my house. Pros and cons of that? Also how am I supposed to buy the boat without a trailer? And I recall seeing handles in the catalog for carrying the boat around with 2 people easily. If I got the 2 boats would that be a good add on?
Also should I look into getting a boat cover?

Grab that mast...it will have the Comptip already on it!!

That is a decent price and you might even get it down from there.

He might even have the other parts you need...rigging.

I emailed him about it last night and about the rigging today and haven't gotten a response, yet.

And I emailed a dealer about possibly buying a comptip and they said there's a fair amount of cutting to do to the mast to attach it, is it a huge task and does the comptip mast attachment require all comptip parts or will regular 2011 lines and rigging fit it?

It is pretty easy and everything is interchangeable. I have done it before.

However, the Comp Tip alone is about $612 plus shipping.

That mast is factory assembled. A new mast is $1743 plus shipping.

Do the math!

I'm planning on looking at boat #1 this weekend, no time for #2 right now too busy and it's 2 hours away and still, no trailer.

If I end up buying #1 I'll see if I can have a comptip installed by someone who knows what they're doing at least on the 1986 mast it has. Again I get the trailers I need and all fresh lines and rigging, harnesses, and trap wires, from #1.

If the guy gets back to me about the mast he's selling before then I will rethink it but that depends also if he has trailers and rigging.

Then with the trailer from boat #1 I'll be able to get the 2008 boat switch out parts depending upon which I'm sailing and work my way from there if all goes well.

I asked for a complete list of all the parts missing from the 2008 boat and he hasn't gotten back to me and that was 3 days ago <img src="<>/frown.gif" alt="frown" title="frown" height="15" width="15" />. Hopefully it's still for sale but I never would've been able to buy it within this time and not seeing it anyway.

If you buy an 1986 boat, I wouldn't waste the money on a Comp-tip for it unless you put it on a newer boat.

I would absolutely buy them both, and when you decided that the Hobie 16 is too slow you should be ale to sell that 2008 for a small profit.

You mean the 1986? And the seller of the mast just got back to me and he has cat trax so trailer would be the last thing along with trapeze wires and harnesses unless are those standard with a 1999? Because he just wants to give me the entire boat. Still hoping that the 2008 for sale because this would perfectly set me up.

That stuff would mosty all be the same, standing riggin will be different. However the newer style is only $100 at salty dog.

So $100 for lines and rigging? How much do the trapeze wires and harnesses go usually? And is the 1999 mast the same as the current one?

Any local offers known of for ready to race catamarans on/near Long Island would be great.
