Sailing on Maui?
Aloha,
I will be in the Islands in February and was hoping to do a bit of sailing while there. I ran across a place to rent an H16 but was looking for maybe something slightly bigger OR cheaper. Any recommendations? I will be on both the big island and Maui.
Also, are there any yacht club races on either islands? It's always fun to crew in such a beautiful place!
Mahalo,
Shawn
Not much to choose from on those islands. The big island will only have sport fishing charters in Kona and Maui's west side has one beach cat rental, I think the guy's name is Chuck Johnson. There's some big cat
cattle boats
that sail on the west side of Maui also.
I almost forgot! there's a guy in Kona that just bought a used Hobie 17, his name is Art McMahon.
Hope this helps
We have been here two weeks on Maui. Only beach cats we have seen that might be for rent are two Waves and a Getaway at Grand Wailea, south of Kihei, where we are staying. All the rentals at Sugar Beach are gone on Maalaea Bay. One more week to check things out.

We checked out the Cat's at Grand Wailea on Maui today. There are two Waves and a Getaway. They only rent to people staying at the Grand Wailea, which we were not. Rate was $40 per hour. The two waves both had missing rudder cams, making it impossible to lock down the rudders. The Getaway had the front tramp torn off, and the port hull had taken a major hit at the bow. It was caved in but still sailable.
Also on the beach was a 20ft Super Cat with the transome blown out. An Inter 17 that looked to be in good shape was also there, another priviate party.

Dude the big boats don't even sail that channel. You must have some deathwish to try it on a H16. Are you in Hawaii?
Have you sailed in Hawaii? There isn't many boats in Maui cause there is this wind line that is 100 yards off shore on the lee side of the island. Go stand at the dock at Lahaina and look straight out, you'll see the wind line. The next stop is Tahiti, THAT is why there are so few cats on Maui. The USCG will pick your sorry a__ up but leave the boat.

The prevailing wind line isn't quite that close to shore. It runs from Kapalua to the south end of Lanai. That said, it can still blow dogs offa chains inside the wind line.
If you do get into trouble you may fetch up on Ship Wreck Beach on Lanai. It not, make sure you've got a lotta French francs to spend in Tahiti.
