Jib Sheets for H16
Would someone be kind enough to help.......I have purchased an old H16 (year 1981) which had few fittings attached.
I understand the Jib sheet is continuous.
I believe that in some wind conditions the jib sheet is cleated and the jib is worked using the traveller. Is this true or is it cleated all the time?
How long is the the Jib rope?
Does the crew (on trapeze) hold the jib sheet or does he hold the the jib traveller rope. Does he hold both while on trapeze?
Is the traveller rope continuous or two separate ropes?
First, get a catalog and assembly manual from Hobie cat at http://www.hobiecat.com/
The catalog is online if you dig around and find it. The assembly manual for the 16 has to be ordered at this time. The catalog shows the jib assembly which may help until you get the assembly manual.
The lengths for the 16 cables and lines can be found at http:/
The jib sheet is continous. The stock Hobie 16 doesn't have a remote line for the traveler. It's moved by hand. If you have this type of arrangement on your boat then it's continous as well. The Idea for the remote traveler line is that the jib and traveler could be adjusted from the wire if needed. Sometimes both jib cleats and the Traveler must be used to set the jib for a certain point of sail and wind, etc.
Phil Bermans book The Hobie 16 Performance Manual is available from Hobie and loaded with H-16 specific information.
Ricks book, Catamaran Racing for the 90's and The Catamaran Tuning Guide by Michael Fragale will help you once you get up and going, and are available from this web site.
HALO
Well jib cart out far and jib sheet can be cleated if you want but i dont because you can drop it in the strong stuff. Main traviler out as well and main sheet on and just work off the hight of the boat. Yeah the crew should hold the jib sheet because if the wind does swind and your bows drop well all i can say "good night". Length of the jib sheet should be about 6 meters maybe longer. You might think its bad to have a long one because it congestest your tramp but its better for down wind and over al just easyer, just try any thing over 4metters. What i suggest buy about 8-10 metters and just cut off what you dont need, spare rope is all ways good. Well have fun bye.
