Mast questions and mast care
I was toying with the boat today and the mast seemed oddly heavy. At least it seemed heavier than it was when I put it on the trailer, under the tramp. Is it possible that it's become water logged from snow melting on it???? How much should an H16 comp tip mast weigh??? I'd say it felt like 60-70 lbs. I could plop it on a bathroom scale to find out.
Also, do I risk having the mast bow by not having the end's supported? I just have it sitting on the cross beams of the trailer, for the winter, so I have room to put my new tramp on when it shows up.
It is possible for an older CompTip to wick moisture in over time. That a look at the leading edge and trailing edge (under the luff track)... this is a mold part line where we grind off some flashing. We paint gel over the area now, but older boats were left raw. We found that there was enough porosity to let moisture pass under pressure. That can happen with heating and cooling of the mast in very humid conditions.
