New to Sailing. Buying a 96' Wave. Need tips
I am very new to sailing and Cats. I am in the process of taking up Sailing lessons. I saw an AD for a 96' Hobie Wave and want to get it. Here in the Philippines you seldom come accross the WAVE. The seller does not know anything about this WAVE either as it was just left by the owner for him to sell.
Need to know some stuff as I have no idea how to look at a Hobie if it's in good condition.
1) Tips how to look at wave and spot common parts that usually are damaged due to wear and tear.
2) How do I know if this is a WAVE CLASSIC or WAVE CLUB. And what is the difference between both?
3) Should this come with Instruction Manual/Assemly Manual?
4) Is the 96' Wave exactly the same as the 97's-2003? Want to know if this is a good year model for the Wave or should I look for another year model?
Thanks! Will wait for you tips before I go look at the Wave.
Francis
Great boat and you will enjoy it as a beginner, or as an advanced sailor -- just plain fun.
Answers to:
1) They are pretty indestructible, but some things to look for are if the gudgeons are loose. No problem - drill all the way through and put in backing plates.
The bottom of the skeg may be scruffy
The caps under the seat padding could be loose and leaking -- No problem, reseat with 5200
2)Wave Classic has wires down each side to tighten the tramp and has cup holders, while the club version has to be laced up tight and no cup holders.
3)No, Don't need it. They are totally simple. For fastest settings, rake the mast as far back as possible and take up most of the slack in the sidestays.
4) They are all the same. The hulls are rotomolded (popped out like garbage cans) and the initial tooling is very, very expensive. Not likely they will ever change it.
You may need a new sail. No problem -- you can buy the Hobie sail or a better sail from Calvert right here on this website's OnLine Marine Store.
Thanks for the tips Rick!
Got the WAVE! They gave me a new sale as they could not find the old one.
Every part seems OK. They also gave me all new WIRES/ROPES/SHACKLES,etc.
The only old stuff are the HULLS, TILLER BAR, RUDDER ASSEMBLY, MAST and TRAMP (I think I also got a CLUB as the HULL have inspection ports and my TRAMP is the one with the TRAMP RACK and has to be laced up.)
I probably have to get some rudder bushings and extra rudder cam.
I have some concerns and hope you can help.
1) MAST: My mast has the BALL attached to the LOWER MAST and the CUP attached to the FORWARD CROSSBAR. The NEW MANUAL I downloaded has the CUP Attached to the LOWER MAST and the BALL attached to the FORWARD CROSSBAR. Is it possible and adviseable to convert to the NEW STYLE MAST? Can I just buy the parts or do I have to buy the whole MAST ASSEMBLY?
2) TILLER CROSSBAR: My tiller crossbar is not connected to the RUBBER ELBOW. It's missing a "pin" or "screw". Do you know what the part numnber of this is? This is not the "elbow connector spring buttons".
I found some parts. Is this the one?: 3052 "tiller connection kit"
Thanks for all the help and tips!
Francis
While I do have all those parts on out OnLineMarineStore.com it would be better to call Murray Marine and explain what you need. If you already knew exactly what you wanted you could just go our site at http://www.onlinemarinestore.com and get them, but we don't have a staff standing by to answer phones -- it is an internet biz (although we di anser a lot of the problems.
Since there is so much odd ball stuff, you would be better to call Murrays as they do have a staff that can answer those questions. Call 1-800-786-7245 and X 30
Good luck,
Rick
