Can't help much with the hull shape, the mosquito I built or should say finished building after my dad started it 20 years earlier was an association kit boat, and wouldn't have taken advantage of the measurement tolerances to obtain a better or more buoyant shape. However with any project like this, including my current project, working cleanly helps keep on track with weight, having resin or glue running down the inside of the hull whilst building doesn't do anything but add weight. In saying that I believe and the jury is out on this one, that the inside and outside should be coated with a diluted resin, to seal out water from getting into the timber, water soaking into the timber over time will cause headaches in both weight and long term maintenance.

where do you go to get western red cedar from, for boat building, i have been having trouble finding 5 metre lenghts of 19 x 19 mm for the inwales.
so far i have cut out the hull sides and transom, and built the deck jig. but have come to a stop having no timber for the inwales.
any help on finding wesern red cedar in the north or west of melbourne would be great. thank you.

Try asking Tim Heaney - Frecheville heaney are Wooden Boat builders. Tim has lately been building Sabres. I'm sure he would be using cedar. 03 5156 7085 at the workshop.

There's a pretty big gallery of pictures of plywood boat building on www.thebeachcats.com regarding a plywood blade http://www.thebeachcats.com/modules.php?...=view_photo.php and an A-class http://www.thebeachcats.com/modules.php?...=0&thold=0. They're not mossies but you may get some ideas. <img src=

Greyarea,
Can't help you source the cedar around Melbourne but just so you know if you do find it but can't get the long lengths there is no problem in scarfing two lengths (>8:1) together to get the required length.
Also I underestand the slightly fuller hull shapes are doing better, however I'd be happy to be corrected by the Mossie sailors.
So make sure when you glass the keel line the resin fully cures. During our winter that means leaving it greater than 7 days before putting the hull in the deck jig.

Personally I'd also steam the hull a little if it is not specified in the plans to make sure the hull was reasonabley full. If you want to be a little more adventurous you can put a very small fillet with lightweight filler under the inner glass tapes on the apex of the keel to encourage further fullness.

If there are class templates I'd get a copy before hand to make sure I could make the hulls as full as the class regs would allow.

I'm not a Mossie sailor but I have built a lot of ply cats.
So please cross check my suggestions with the top Mossie sailors just to make sure they are relavent to the current Mossie trends.

Good luck.
If there is anything I can help with let me know.

Regards,
Phill

Wildtoy,

Check out this thread if you are interested in going down the path of building from timber. Also check out the Mosquito web site for details of purchasing plans.
